Hey all, I'm back. So I replaced my spark plugs not to long ago because I had a CEL stating two misfires and everything has been pretty good since then. Well, I just got another CEL and the code is P115c which, after some Google-Fu, looks to be the Mass Air Flow sensor. Well, Anyone have a link to how to clean one since that seems to be the consensus on fixing the problem? Or just let me know the part number and I'll just replace it. Thanks again everyone!
I picked some up at Autozone the same day I posted this and I was able to clear the code. However, the code just came back today and I'm assuming that the cleaner didn't do it. The good thing, at least what I'm assuming, is that cleaning it did clear the CEL for a few days so maybe replacing the MAF is what I need to do. Only thing is, when I google "2007 Mini Cooper MAF", I can find them for anywhere from $50 to $300 and I'm not sure if the cheap ones will fit my car or not and whether or not the expensive ones will last longer. Obviously I want to save as much money as possible but at the same time I don't want to put a piece of crap part on my car.
I'd recommend trying to clean it a few more times first. At one time I ran an oiled K&N filter (bad idea) and ran into the same problem. Took three tries to get all the oil out because the air has to pass through a maze inside the MAF before it gets to the hot film element. Sometimes they can't be saved but it's worth a shot.
Clean it then see if a CEL comes on. Also check the plug in the harness and make sure it clicks all the way in, have you have the thermostat or anything repaired that would bump or cut the wire? See the plug below 13627542418, make sure the socket is all the way clipped in and trace the wires back to the harness and make sure they were not cut or damaged from a past repair.
I have cleaned the MAF with the cleaner. I'll probably do it again just because I still have a lot of the cleaner left and I would rather not spend the 200 bucks on a new MAF. First off, how much should I be spraying into it and how much of the MAF should I be coating with it? Is it just the inside of the cylinder or the entire thing, inside and out including the connector? How long do I let it sit on there or am I supposed to wipe it off? Last time I did it, I coated the inside and then let it sit for about 15 minutes and then reinstalled the MAF. The CEL went away for a couple days and then came back. Thanks for all your help guys!
Sounds like you got it, i second try will confirm if its needs replaced after that. I always check the connections and look for damage before shelling out money.
Before you shell out for a new MAF; have you read the codes with a quality scan tool? I've replaced maybe one or two MAFs ever, there is usually other underlying codes that accompany it and it is actually a fault set due to another problem.
Not to say that you don't have a soiled MAF from an oiled filter.
Alright guys, I figured since I'm still having this issue, I wouldn't start a new thread. So I cleaned the shenanigans out of the MAF sensor and my CEL went away again. Well, again it came back but this time with another code as well as the P115C. I got P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire and P2188 System too rich at Idle Bank 1. I did a little Google-Fu and it seems like people who get these generally change the AFR/O2 sensor in the exhaust and it seems to fix it. My question is this: should I replace both my O2 and MAF sensors or just the O2 sensor? Can I feasibly do the O2 sensor in my driveway or is this going to be the one I'm gonna need to take to a shop to have done?
If you have to check the O2 you can do it in the driveway. I would get ES2949705 also as it makes it easier, i did my front sensor with this tool. When you install make sure to keep the sensor head clean.
There is a different part number for the front and the rear:
To remove and install the O2 (oxygen sensor). So you dont damage the wire while you install, it grabs it by the side and works with an extension and ratchet standard tool.
Is it at all that difficult of a fix? I've only just started trying to do more DIY with this car than before and I'm very much a beginner. Will I need any sort of equipment special to this kind of repair?
I have 2012 Countryman and I am having tons of issues with this car. The yellow engine light is on along with the Engine Malfunction Reduced Power message. If we unplug the MAF the engine malfunction light goes off. The codes are reading random misfires and retarded timing. Can this all be caused from the MAF not working properly.
