P0500 Code? No other lights...

Hi All,

I was diagnosing a low speed fan issue the other day and unplugged the R1 relay in the engine bay (engine symbol with a lighting bolt going through it). Afterwards the SES light turned on and scanner came back with a P0500 code. The SES eventually turned off after a couple of starts the but the P0500 persists in the scan gauge. No other relevant lights on though (except for the brake pad warning indicator).

Does anyone have input on what i may have done? Tach, speedo, etc all work normally as well...

Just went through this nearly identical problem. Have you cleared all of the adaptive values on your vehicle? You'll need a quality diagnostic tool to do this, but it worked when I just went through this very problem.

The issue turned out to be one of the brake sensors had snapped from rubbing against the tire. Ended up shorting them together and the code had went away.

Actually, the brake sensor functions by continuity. When the brake pads are not worn beyond the predetermined limit, the two wires are shorted. When the pad (yes, just one) is worn past the limit, the metal loop on the brake sensor wears off and becomes open circuit. Your rubbing must have been so long that it severed one of the two wires.

Why I know? I am so cheap that I thought I would repair a departed sensor to save a few $ to buy a burrito.
