Has the part price for a HPFP jumped since 2yrs ago???
Hello all
I own a 2010 convertible S w/ 63k miles on it. This has possibly been the cutest mistake Ive ever made.
I know that the HPFP extended warranty covers 2007-2009...but why not 2010 when its the very.same.part.?
When looking at thread entries from 2014/2015 I saw that part going for 250-350...now when I look BOOM! 1000 or more..are you kidding me??
After further digging and calling around, I was told that VDO made a deal with Mini and now MIni has a monopoly on the dang part, you know they are getting it for hardly nothing while the rest of us poor saps either have to get it from them or get the part from some retailer for just a little less...a little.

-changed out coils and plugs
-got a fuel injector clean
And I gave em a laundry list to check..including injectors and they are saying its the HPFP...but do you get a strong gas smell with that on cold start?

Yes, check the low-pressure pump, carbon build up on the intake side of the head, and then the coils / plugs. Then go to the HPFP. Yes it went up because they had it at pretty much a warranty replacement price then it shot up. We have some in stock.

The coils and plugs have been replaced on my own. was still getting misfires on all cylinders. Also did a fuel injection clean.
Finally took it into the crooks (Mini Service) they have it for a week to "diagnose" and when dropping it off I gave them what I had done previously to help with guesswork and what Id requested for them to check:
-HPFP
-intake valves
-valve springs and seals
-all cylinders
-gaskets
-re-check the timing chain that they recently replaced. (extended warranty)
-mass air flow system/air filter (was getting codes)
When they finally call me they say its the HPFP with **** poor explanation and didnt even check the other stuff "you gotta replace the pump first before we can check to see if anything else is wrong...you dont say..really??). Said that the misfire codes were caused by "low fuel rail" but only said that the HPFP needed replacing. When I looked at the estimate which they finally gave me after some bitching I saw:
-HPFP-1253.99
-pressure hose -63.99 (ok...is that really needing replacement? is it leaking??--that question wasn't answered yet)
-feed line- 169.99 (again, is this leaking?)
Could bad lines to the HPFP be the cause? if the fuel transfer is disrupted would it cause issues with the pump which would provide misfire codes? Could this be a matter of just not being lazy POS and seeing if they are leaking? if not, then why are they calculating that price into the estimate?

If it isn't going to be covered under an extended program by MINI, you might as well have an Indy mechanic do the job. They probably won't need to replace the hose/line. I think MINI does that because it is a liability issue and they don't want call backs on leaks if the parts don't mate correctly or develop a leak down the road.

It is at a indie mechanic.
But remember I have a strong fuel smell with hard cold start as well...a failing HPFP doesnt produce a gas smell...hence me asking about a leaky line/hose

Maybe you need the dealer or a different mechanic?
If the HPFP is bad and the tank fuel pump is pumping gas, then it could be leaking somewhere along the line and causing a fuel odor. I'm just guessing on this!
The well trained modern BMW/MINI mechanic works off the flow chart diagnosis q&a that is in the software that they use to diagnose problems. Can't replace C unless you've done A & B, which can add up to lot's of dollars. Can be very frustrating.

Another price increase is the engine is out of production. The after production price always bumps up significantly. Working for a tier 1 ho made pumps th production cost really goes up.
1: We built a bank of parts and moved the line to a separate building. $$$
2: That building had all parts support lines for non current production. In full production you may have had 3 or 4 lines now you have 1.
3: runs have to be done to requalify the moved line
4: you have to keep a crew trained to run it and order parts in low volumes from your suppliers who are all doing the same thing.
5: You have a line that is highly automated taking up a huge chuck of floor space hat requires maintenance and gets run about once a month.
The whole part costs allot more. We do not like it but it does.

That's funny. My dealership told me that they no longer replaced the HPFP hard lines as part of the repairs. No idea why they would replace the hose though.
After I voiced my concerns over the price increase and not being included in the HPFP warranty extension, they sent my information to MINI USA and was told to cover 50% of the repairs, which still equaled ~$750.00. Still more than I feel I should pay, so I'm keeping other avenues open.

It will only have ~200psi of fuel pressure, or even less, when it needs between 700psi at idle and up to 1,800psi when driving.
You'll have cylinder misfires. Lean conditions. All kinds of trouble.

And I still feel like the 2010 models should be included in the warranty extension, since the part number for the pump is exactly the same as the models that are covered. So I should be paying $0 really.

Btw.. we were just able to get the Genuine PSA N14 part for you guys but it's a little time to come in. Linked below. We are working on getting it sooner, but right now that is the time frame. Hold tight. We do have the Genuine MINI ones right now in stock at a lower price since last month.
