I'm looking to go ahead and buy a new crank pulley before I actually need to replace mine. I've already decided just to be on the safe side I want to go with a dampened pulley.

So my question is which one and why? ATI or SFI?

What's the pros and cons of each?

 

I have no first hand experience......but if it was me, I would go with ATI. They are pretty much the best of the best.

 

I just changed mine and went with ATI, it cost a little more but it will not need to be changed for quite some time.

 

I'm going to get stock diameter, and am basically looking for reasons not to get the sfi, at almost 100 dollars less the sfi is what I'm leaning towards unless someone has any negative feedback to sway me away. But I wanted to get some feedback about both before I spend that much money either direction

 

I went with the ATI based on it's well known reputation but I was also lucky enough to pick one up here on the NAM parts for sale for quite a bit less that retail.

 

Went with a PRW. Looks similar to the Speedmaster one I believe you are looking at?

I think there was a member here with the speedmaster that has had a positive experience with it.

We've only had the PRW on the car for about 3K miles, but it's definitely helped smooth out the engine, especially compared to the half failed stock pulley that was replaced.

Install was straightforward and not hard. Definitely replace the crank seal too.

I agree with ya, I want an ATI as well but can't justify dropping that much on a crank pulley when there are other options out there... So far, no negative reviews of any. I'm currently running the ALTA non dampened pulley, money was tight so I threw it on as temporary band-aid I guess you could say.

Hmm... I'm highly leaning towards the ATI DAMPENED PULLEY now that I've looked back at all the crank pulley threads.

BTW: We have the "What exhaust to buy" thread. Since this is such a highly debated question, why not make a thread on the pulleys. Rating them, performance, reliability, etc...

For the OP, it looks like you have a few mods so perhaps the ATI is the way to go.

My son's car is strictly a commuter. I have no intentions of adding a pulley, intake or exhaust, nor poly bushings here or there. Unless he gets a bug up his butt and suddenly becomes a car nerd like his dad, then maybe we'll entertain more performance oriented parts...Until then, it will be 'better' not best for replacement parts.

 

I'm done as far as motor mods go, maybe suspension in the future.

 

Beside Zsm, that's pretty irrelevant when it comes to the crank pulleys. They can cause the same amount of damage whether the car is highly modified or completely stock, broken bearings, kill your oil pump, etc...

 

That's what I figured. But all my cars before this have been non dampened from the factory.

 

You've made the right choice going with a dampened pulley.

Why choose the ATI Damper over others? Well we sell several pulleys and have installed all of them so my opinion is based on using and installing them.
When you sit the fluid damper and ATI side by side you can see the quality difference and will just pick the ATI based on that.
Next though is the fit. When pressing them on or comparing the tolerances again the ATI was always consistent and fit perfect every time.
But the most important was actual dampening. Sure you can google inertia dampers vs fluid dampers for days and find the data shows inertia dampers like the ATI do actually work better. But we actually noticed engines running smoother at idle and through the rpm range. We actually tell customers if their car is running now to put a glass of water on the valve cover and watch it while it idles. Then change to the ATI and do it again and see how much less the water moves. It's a simple test but will show the improvement.

Oh and just FYI the ATI may cost more, but profit on it is actually less than the fluid damper. I'd rather make less and sell a better product for the customer. That is how much better I think it is.

This will be my 11th year in a row. (Even though the last few have been Mini-less)

 

This is gonna be my first trip to the Dragon. I've tried to go in the past with the Rx7 meet, they call it the Deals Gap Rotary Rally.

 

ATI is so well built and works so well, it is the only damper that is installed on EVERY NASCAR motor. I put one on my track car this year after the stock damper came apart.

 

I don't buy stuff just because its "the only product used by (insert franchise)" companies can easily pay money to sponsor something and say that.

I don't follow the herd lol. I try to do a ton of research.

Well Way, that comment about the cup of water has me pretty convinced, besides I'm tired of researching. I'll place my order as soon as I'm able. Probably wait for the inclement weather to pass. But hopefully I will see a smoother idle and through out the RPM range.

Welp I bit the bullet and got everything but a puller from you Way, I got a 2% pulley, new crank seal, and new bolt.

Now I just gotta figure out what belt size to use with a 16% reduction pulley as well and might as well replace tensioner while I'm that far.
