My Code 2885 Boost Deviation Solution
I wanted to share my experience with the forum since most of the information I used to solve this issue I found here on NAM. My 2009 Mini Cooper S was throwing a 2885 code pretty much every time you pushed the throttle past 3/4 it would go into 1/2 power mode. I could clear the code and it would do this again and was very repeatable.
I started by removing all the heat shielding from the turbo and downpipe. Once I had the downpipe off I was able to determine that my catalytic converter was not clogged, however the gasket from the turbo to the downpipe was blown out. A quick trip to my local Mini dealer and I had the new gasket. I also checked the travel on the wastegate actuator. The spec says it should not have more than 8mm of travel. When I checked mine it had almost 18mm. I adjusted the rod, verified the travel with a dial indicator and a vacuum pump, and put it all back together. I also replaced the all of studs on the turbo and had to re-tap one of the holes on the turbo as it became galled during removal.
Once I finished up the oil change and air filter cleaning I test dove the car and the boost code was gone. I could drive the car as hard as I wanted and I could not get the car to go into half power mode. I was very happy with the outcome. I was preparing for the worst(turbo replacement) and hoping for the best. Now all I have to do is figure out why my *^&* gas cap light keeps coming on and this car will be back to 100%. Hopefully it’s just the leak diagnostic pump, but that’s a task for another day. For now I’m enjoying being able to accelerate quickly without fear of reduced power. Thanks to everyone on this forum for the wealth of knowledge that I was able to pull from to get this little car back on the road.

It really was great to be able to fix the issue by making some adjustments rather than needing to buy a $900 remanufactured turbo. The car is a completely different animal now. It builds boost almost instantly and is much more pleasant to drive. I always thought it was zippy before, but now that the wastgate is working properly it is quicker in normal mode than it ever was in sport mode. I really enjoy driving the car again.

How many miles on your '09 when it started showing 2885?

We bought the car with 84,000 on the odometer. It showed up very infrequently around 89-90K but had been showing up more frequently as the car now has 96K on it. I have no idea how long the wastegate had been that far out of adjustment, but now its all dialed in and good to go! I still need to replace my diagnostic leak pump on the EVAP system and then it will be completely CEL free.

OP this is some really useful info as that code can come up for several reasons.
Mine was a diverter valve at one point (replaced). On a tune I will get it when boosting hard in a higher gear.
I am leaning towards the wastegate being the issue as well.
I need to learn how to adjust a wastegate I guess. I was going to just replace the turbo.

Another confession associated with the repairs...... When I went to clean my air filter (drop in K&N unit) it was really dirty. So that could have helped out somewhat as well. All I know I know is that now it is a completely difrerent machine.
