Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).
I’ve had engine trouble recently with my 2007 MCS. Long story but; no compression in #3 cylinder, burnt piston. Small gouge in cylinder wall, perhaps 8 mm long, just below where the rings would sit when the piston is at TDC. (Too deep to hone out) I’m sure I could put another piston in and run the engine the way it is but I’m doubtful about how long it would last………I would have wicked blow-by at the damaged area which is about when the piston is seeing peak combustion pressures.
I have considered boring & oversize pistons but I am hoping to do an economy repair and have a reliable driver.
I’m hoping to scrounge a decent used short block for a reasonable price but it seems they are very hard to find. What are suitable donors cars & years for the N14 engine in my 07 MCS?
Here's a wrecking yard that seems to have Mini Cooper engines. Whether or not they're "decent" is the risk. Might be worth checking with them. https://www.lkqonline.com/?ref=b-ppc...kq%20autoparts Don't expect to do an "economy repair" on any Mini Cooper --- especially labor.
Thanks for the reply. Labour is not an issue. I don't have to pay myself....
I'm having trouble locating any used engines that are local. The ones in salvage yards are pricey and at some distance or they don't want to disassemble an engine and sell only the short block.
What I'd like to know is what yeaers models of Mini use thesame block. Will a block from a Clubman or Countryman fit my 2007 MCS? ( and what years)
Sorry for your loss...check car-part.com you can use ANY engine from 2007 to 2010 turbocharged. they all are the same regardless whether it is a clubman, HT, conv (2008-2010 i think) countryman did not come with N14 engine since they came out 2011+. since the block is at no use, try to hone it and put slightly oversized rings if they exist!
I was just on the same boat as you (search my post activity). I purchased a used motor online from SWEngines with 51k miles for $3,900 shipped, however it took 2+ weeks to arrive. Motor was in great shape and my Mini is running strong again.
FYI - If you can afford to do so I recommend a new clutch, fork and bearing while you have the motor disassembled. Practically no additional labor involved. The local vendors on this site (ECS/Pelican) offer these parts at good prices).
For a used engine, +1 on checking out www.car-part.com. I've sourced used engines, transmissions, steering components, etc. from this site with great success. Another great suggestion from GAT above for a place to source one. I have also seen a few part outs on the forums that you can check out in the marketplace. Might also want to try places like LKQ Corporation as they buy and sell used parts all over the nation. Most of what we find on car-part is being sold by LKQ so maybe see if there is one local to you. Otherwise, I do believe they ship no matter what size the item is. For any additional small parts please be sure to check out our catalog HERE. I'm also sure that our tech articles may help you during this process as well. Can check them out HERE. Good luck and if you need anything please let me know.

A couple questions ---
Where is "local"?
Are you willing to pay shipping costs?
Will you settle for both block halves and the crank, with nothing else --- or are you going to do a ring job too?
I ask 'cause I just obtained one from a guy that says he occasionally gets access to a block. I don't want to pester him 'til I know what you'll settle for.
Thanks for the reply! I am located in Nova Scotia, Canada.
I don’t mind paying reasonable shipping costs but I am on a tight budget. I can’t justify sinking a lot of money into an old car with no hope of return if I decide to sell it in the future.
I have put out some inquiries to some local people and have got a couple of leads on cars that may be parted out soon. I hope to find something reasonably close before I consider shipping from far away. The exchange in currencies and import costs all add up when shipping from the US.
I will consider a good used bare block if the cost is low.
