Just noticed drops of oil on the floor and pinpointed the burning smell to oil burning off the downpipe. Stealership said it's the oil pan but I don't think so. Oil is coming from the top. Need ideas as to where!
If you want to DIY, get the Detroit Tuned super kit that includes a flexible braided oil feed line, new bolts/washers, and oil filter housing gasket since you'll be all up in there for the oil line alone. For extra security get the oil cooler gasket too, which sits on the oil filter housing and can leak. Took me about 15 hours total with a friend.
Ordered the Super Kit. Thanks 3lusive. Looks like hefty workload but looking forward to it. Have been doing everything by myself - should be fun! Lol. Thanks for the tip for the oil cooler gasket. Anything else while in there?

Just make sure to take your time and have clean surfaces, torque specs are your friend, and make sure to tighten the compression fittings. Being that you bought the super kit you should have everything you need while in there.
Your car doesn't look rusty at all so you should be fine. My car had spent 8 winters in Wisconsin so I spent a lot of time torching off some of the bolts, especially the DP to exhaust clamp, that was hell. Honestly the process is all very straightforward, just time consuming. And some of those DP heat shield bolts can be very difficult to access. When I buttoned everything up I left some of them out because it would have been just as difficult or more difficult to screw them back in.
Make sure to do both coolant flush and oil change afterwards, and be prepared when you take off the oil filter housing because a ton of coolant will spill out. I'm pretty sure I drained as much coolant as I could before starting too, from the low hanging coolant line that runs across the front of the car.
I'm going to add my oil leak concern here rather than starting a new thread and hope someone can advise me on a strategy to follow.
My 2008 N 12 Justa Cooper Clubman has developed a finger wetting oil drip underneath the engine from... somewhere. I am guessing it's an aging gasket although I'll have my indy garage see what source may be lurking above.
As I face the car, the leak is lower left of center. I'll try a photo later.
If it's a leaking gasket, that should be expensive to replace, so perhaps I'd need to learn how long one should live with a dying gasket. Dripping oil would be cheaper than a new gasket at least until the oil flow got to be significant.
Does anyone know what this portends? What are the best gasket strategies learned over time? Are Minis known for unusually delicate gaskets?
I'm just a hack shadetree mechanic, but based on past experience I'd say repair/replace ASAP. Letting fluids coat all the adjacent and lower parts is bad. For example, I just found a leak on our new to us R53. While I'm tempted to live with it a while, I've decided that I will not, beacause it's dripping right onto a rubber bushing that will die very quickly if soaked in oil.
Had a bushing deteriorate because of leakage on my old maxima last year and the ride got, well, interesting. Lived with that for a week or two and ruined two good tires almost immediately in the process.
Pics look like Oil Filter housing is leaking..... while you have it in service position you might as well replace all those gaskets.... mine was really leaking a lot when I replaced turbo.... I fixed everything.
