Speedo error

Upon picking up my 06 Cooper JCW from out of state I observed the speed reading was off.

My wife was driving her vehicle and I the Cooper and she set her cruise to 70mph and I stayed beside and i set mine at 75 mph and we stayed together. She set at 75 and i had to go to 82 to stay beside.

I noticed at 30 to 35 I seemed a tad slower with traffic but not as noticeable as freeway speed of 65 and people flying past me.

What gives? I checked to see if the current tire size is on car and it is 205/45r17.

Thanks for any insight.

discussed MANY times

this is "normal" .... others have said all BMW are this way too

attributed to it being common "over there' for a company to get HUGE fines if the speed registers too low .... SO many build in a 5 mph (or some # of kph) cushion . . .

Yep, pretty common. I'm about 5mph off of actual speed. FWIW, this isn't limited to the Mini. Fiat has the same issue.

I just picked up a used '06 and found the same "feature". Came here to search it out and found this thread straight away. So does this affect the odometer also?

No, it doesn't affect the odometer.

I was reading through the threads and found there is a scan tool that also can be used to modify some settings on 1st gen and 2nd gen Mini's...speedometer was one of the settings....trying to find it again...thought I had bookmarked it :(...

I believe you can only "fix" the digital display, not the actual speedometer.
