Climate Control Issues - 2009 JCW

I have a 2009 JCW and I have started having climate control issues. The vents seem to have a mind of their own, often times reacting differently to the auto selection vs. defrost / front vent / foot vent. The temperature control is also not working it will, for no real reason, get very hot then start blowing cold air. Its really weird, there seems to be no pattern to how it will react. This morning the defrost would not work.

Anyone have a clue as to what is going on? Seems like it is more than just a servo driven door not working. Is there a factory reset for the climate control unit?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

I have found most gremlins such as those are caused by low voltage, you might need a battery

Wow... I wouldn't have guessed that! Do you know what the supply voltage should be? I have not checked the battery voltage or the charging voltage, the car seems to start fine.
Thanks

This is where I would start. Even though it starts the car, could still be marginal. How old is the battery, is it original? If so, I'd go ahead and replace it..

Well I bought a new battery, installed it, re-taught the windows and sun roof, and still have the issue. This morning it seemed like the heat didn't even come on.
In the Bentley manual it recommends "resetting" the battery in the through the OBD2 port. I have ordered the cable for that from Amazon, but I hold little hope that this is going to help.

What say the experts?

Thanks for the help,
Brad

Hi Folks,
I still have the issue with the Mini's heating / cooling. I do not think that the duct servos are the issue as the air does shift to any of the given ports from time to time. Anyone have any ideas???

Its bends the air on the flaps, not just the shifts from one area to the next. That's another servo section.

You can get the Schwaben MINI Scan tool as it reads faults in the HVAC system and see whats going on.

What #is the air blkend servo in the picture?

Wow that looks like a pretty cool tool!
"Retracts calipers good brake pad replacement"... I never would have thought that you would do that through the obd2, I use a c-clamp on the old Chev!

I appreciate your help!

The part number are the 11 digit MINI part number right on the bottom , they align to the corresponding #.

#3 in the diagram ?

That for certain BMW models and the newer MINI that just came out with electronic parking brake.

You are welcome.

Great, now we will get to the bottom of the fault code HVAC system.

Got my code scanner today, wow that was fast!

So here's the rub:

9C63/present - IHKA: Reference switch, air-distribution flap drive
9C4F/not present - IHKA: mechanism, air-distribution flap drive

E72D/Not Present - No message (selector lever position SHD), receiver integrated automatic heating / air conditioning system/IHKS/IHS, transmitter SHD
E717/not present -

I did not have the car running. I did not reset the codes. I will do that next and see what changes.

EDIT / UPDATE
I cleared the codes and started the car. The only code that returned was the 9C63. I used the tool to manually actuate the flap and it seemed to move to all positions. I also watched the flap position using the live data and it moved.
I thought about resetting the ECM, but didnt know if that would be a good idea or not.

Brad

Awesome,

So the tool found it, for the other codes to show up , if any, drive the car some and use all the climate control functions, like all the operation. They scan it again, i think you might have a issue in another flap. If nothing, then reset the ECM.

Hello, I recently have same problem on my R56 S(its has automatic climate control) since last month. I took my car to the local Mini/BMW specialists, and they give me the faulty code 9C63. The local mechanic charged me $700 bucks to replace to the blend door actuator, but the problem is still there.

Can someone tell me what was the outcome to fix this. Was it a lower or upper actuator or the controls that you touch to adjust the temperature and select where the air blows. I have the same problem.

May you share what you did to fix it. What was the part you had to replace. Thank you.
