Hey guys urgently need your help, think this mechanic is taking me for ride.
Long story short he replaced clutch and Turbo, Turbo about a year ago car was just left parked, battery did die got replacement this a 2007 Cooper S
Anyway fitted everything car just cranks , they plugged into diagnostic crank sensor showed up. They cleared it came back. Bought new sensor, no error of crank sensor so they say now
They think cause car sat for so long its possible it lost its key coding and want to get someone in to "reprogram".
Am I being taken for a ride, a friend says if coding lost it wouldn't crank?
Sounds like the CAS module has gone bad (car access center). It's common when the battery goes completely dead for the CAS to die. You can try to recode it, but it all depends on if you can communicate with the car still with the scan tool. If you remove the upper dashboard trim panel you'll see the unit.

Thanks PP first off thank you so much for all your tutorials you have done , I was just telling a friend that the guru replied and we need to listen ☺
Would they reprogram it via obd or do they need to remove the dashboard if it is the CAS.
So are we correct in saying it would just crank over if CAS was culprit?

haha you're quite welcome and thank you! Yes, programming would be through the OBDII port. I have seen an instance with a BMW where there was a short in the IBS sensor. Does your R56 have the IBS sensor on the negative terminal of the battery? If so, you can try removing it and seeing if the car starts once removed. It could be the key, but usually it's the CAS that needs to keep the code in check. The CAS is my first initial idea to your issue so I'd start there.

Mine doesn't have the IBS sensor, so I'll wait to see what this tech says about the CAS, would it not normally throw up a code if it was CAS?

I think you'd see them in other module systems like the DME, but yes check for faults. If it's bad you probably wont be able to even communicate with it.

You're welcome. Sounds good. Hope you get it resolved soon.
So I guess a beer is in order, the CAS seems to be the problem , they recon they can't communicate with it, they removed it from car and tried with dme and key.
Guys are saying I need a complete lock set, surely a new CAS from bmw would be sufficient? When you order the cas does it come with the coding?

I had a feeling the CAS was the culprit! I don't know for sure, but I think you may need to order new keys. Yes, it needs to be coded and programmed once installed or it wont start. It's a theft related device so you may actually need to go to a dealer or authorized repair center to install/code as someone will need to be hooked up to BMW's info system when they program it.
