I have notice for some time that I am losing coolant, and recently after trying to find the leak, I think, I've come upon the source of the leak. I am not sure if this is a sensor or what but if I replace it I think the leaking coolant will stop. I need help any info would be great
That looks like the older part from 2011-3/2012 R56 Cooper ( NON S ) on a automatic , they NLA that hose with the metal elbow and the sensor and moved the sensor in the thermostat housing itself , you get a new adapter lead also.
its manual, I've been inspecting it, and it seems to be leaking from the hoses where it is clamped to the metal that the sensor is, but the clamps seems to be on there pretty good, so if i get the newer part would i have to get a new thermostat as well?

Do you have an auto or manual. Looks like a manual trans with the balance weight.
Newer part:
I have previously changed my thermostat and added the wiring adaptor. I have a leak at the metal elbow where the hose connects to it from the thermostat. If I change the upper radiator hose which eliminates the metal elbow and sensor what do I do with the temp sensor connection which will obviously be left unplugged?
It's left unplugged as the new adapter / thermostat took its place. Just tie it back into the main harness with a zip tie. You can wrap the end of the plug with electrical tape just that parts of the harness is done. So it's sealed from water.

That sensor in the elbow is a retrofit temperature sensor to replace the problematic one in the original thermostat on 2011-12 cars. They are known to leak. If you install the updated thermostat, it has a new sensor built-in and you can just replace your hose with the Mini 17122754221 part that doesn't have the metal elbow & sensor. Otherwise you need that sensor.
(17122754221 is listed for the manual transmission cars but will work on the automatic cars for this purpose. You just need to pull off the plastic connector in the bottom of the photo and attach the hose to the existing plastic connector in your car. Like I said, however, you can only do this if you've gotten the new thermostat and the temperature sensor in the elbow is unplugged and no longer being used.)
The sensor pulls out if you squeeze the tabs. You can fix a leaky one by replacing the o-ring, or folks have also had luck just sealing it with black RTV. Lots of details in this thread, read the whole thing:
I have the same problem with my 2012 Cooper S Countryman. I tried removing the sensor to do the RTV fix but it looks like it is two pieces, one fitting into the other. The piece that came out was the sensor and had a bad o-ring but there was still a large black plastic piece with tabs on the elbow. I tried to pull the other piece out but it almost looks press fit into the metal elbow and I did not want to force it. Any suggestions?
