key range terrible, drops signal rolling down windows

2009 r56 justa, it does not have comfort access, we have a brand new mini key and an original, both have the same issue.

Range is feet, somtimes I have to stand right at the door and mash the unlock to get into the car

if it does pick up signal when I'm walking up rolling down the windows they will rarely make it all the way and I can hear it unlocking the doors again, so it must be losing & regaining signal

any ideas? Where are the antenna's located for the keys? Or better yet is there a wiring diagram online anywhere?

In the meantime hold the remote to your chin to boost the signal. Seriously.

It sounds funny and looks funny, but it works.

The remote receiver is in the rear view mirror.

Don't forget to rotate the use of your keys (they charge when you use them). I rotate my keys every week.

Motor on!

Depends on what you mean by "module". There are radio receiver electronics in the rear view mirror housing.

does it feed into the diversity module? Because my radio reception is terrible too, I swapped out the diversity module and it made no improvement

unhooking the trap filters does not seem to affect it either, I've been trying to find a diagram of the whole antenna system but I've not had any luck beyond what I can gather from realoem

Official wiring diagrams are available online at https://www.minitis.com/ ($30 for one day access).

There are also wiring diagrams in the Bentley manual, which on hard copy are awkward to use.

There's one more option. Go to eBay and search for "BMW TIS WDS". These are BMW's repair manual and wiring diagram on DVD. Up to 2008, BMW had distributed these manuals on DVD (then BMW switched to an all-online system, i.e. minitis.com that I linked earlier). The DVD version covers R56, and as there were little or no updates for 2009, they would be valid for your car. Of course, these DVDs sold on eBay are all "unofficial" copies, very cheap.

The interactive WDS (Wiring Diagram System) software works much better than using the printed diagrams on Bentley, which I am sure are just printouts from WDS.
