New Window Regulator Tip
New Window Regulator Tip
I recently had to replace my driver's side window regulator and motor when the cable shredded itself, jamming my window open on a 30 degree morning! Fortunately it wasn't raining, yet, and I was able to get home to change cars.
I had a new regulator and motor on hand since I was anticipating an eventual problem (I cross the USA/Canadian border 4 times daily) from what I had read about the Mickey Mouse nature of the regulator. I made a tool for the window retaining nuts using some 1/8" aluminum flat bar and a pair of 6-32 screws threaded into the bar to form a pair of pins to engage the nuts.
Anyway, on to the tip. After fitting the new regulator and motor, the window worked fine, although it continued to seem labored when going up. There weren't any instructions with the regulator about lubrication so I fitted the new part dry. After several days of use, I popped off the door panel and used a silicone spray to coat the vertical steel guides and plastic trolleys that carry the window. What a difference! The window now goes up and down much faster and smoother. I don't know how long the silicone will stay effective but it's easy to apply and doesn't form a buildup like other lubes.
If your regulator sounds labored, especially raising the window, give the silicone spray a try.
