Replaced the oem battery after 8 years. It still started the MINI but with a tad hesitation on the first start of the day. Replaced it to preclude getting stranded.

Some newbie info here: got my 06 S 2 mos shy of 2 yrs ago had original battery, 8 yrs old, working but "weak" per shop mech. Installed new H5 year ago May, noting small amount of water in well. Last month during a wet spell both DSC & SES came on. Called mech who said disconnect battery & computer may reset. Emptied out boot to do this & found battery almost submerged in well (attached pics). So my warning lit mini has sat a month or so while I collected info, cleaned up the murky mess, repainted, removed the water retaining rubber plug from the well bottom, added gaskets at all brake lites & lift handle, siliconed rubber door seals that didn't, tested the sunroof drains, located online a 200 amp fuse my mechanic says has no part # & installed, reinstalled battery & sadly found my mechanic wrong about the reset & perplexed about the codes found from crank position sensor to undervoltage to CAN (bus) data error from DMR/DDE (DSC lamp on as long as error present) & ready to remove drivers seat to check harness for corrosion.
Seems I'm running in limp mode, no boost, low power, rough idle, having very little fun because it rained, and there's nothing in the manual about it being strictly an indoor machine.
This began my reading on this issue & there are many wet /sad tales out there with huge repair bills begging the obvious questions of how BMW avoided a recall or any responsibility for damages directly attributable to non sealing cars which excel at keeping water in once they flunked keeping it out.

I regret to say, I've seen the water collection in my R53 as well. Not submerged, but definitely 1/2 battery deep.
Don't know how it got in there, and hasn't been back (but saw a shallow one once before)
Can't add anything at this time, but just wanted to say I've been there
