Rack & Pinion Question... Need input.

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I've been on here, yet Mr. Cooper has brought me back again for another problem.

In the attached photo, do you think this is a rebuild? The seal looks busted to me and I'm needing to get this fixed before I have the dealer warranty my P/S pump. Let me know fellas, as it's MUCH appreciated!

If there's oil leaking from the boot, yes, you need to either get it rebuilt or replace it. I'm in the same boat, mine started leaking at the end of last season and it's actually bad enough that my subframe won't rust for years to come. I still have to call a local shop that does rack, suspension and other hydraulics parts to get a quote. Otherwise, you're most likely looking at between 6xx and 1500$. 600 being the cheapest I've found yet including the old core charge (so around 400 once they get your core) and oem is about twice as much.

Yeah, it's sounding expensive right now... Dealer quoted me 1,280 on parts alone :\

Appreciate the input Ghost!

Sounds like your shop is trying to fund their retirement plan, reminds me of my old dentist...

Interesting... Did they say it was damaged and are there any issues they stated that could result from a bad rack? What was your initial complaint for bringing the MINI in? I may suggest to get a second opinion.
