Auxilary Audio Plug
The audio plug is an auxillary input plug for the output of the ipod so that the music plays through the MINI sound system and not through headphones on the ipod. Power to the ipod is via your built in battery.
if you want a good line out source AND power from your car lighter socket, you'll need the aux input cable and a sik Imp.
another option is the denison icelink, which allows you to control your ipod from your steering wheel (if you have the radio controls on there, that is), and also i believe powers your ipod.

Hey jinubob,
pardon my ignorance, but what's a sik Imp? Iwas hoping not to have to run off the battery, since I'll be doing a long road trip. Plug into the lighter? don't want a cord hanging out of the glove box can power be put into the glove box?

the sik imp can be found at: http://www.sik.com
hmm... well, the cords are rather inconspicuous, but if you demand perfection, i suspect you will have to:
1. run all wiring underneath carpeting and other creative ways to hide the wiring
2. somehow connect a lighter socket into the glove compartment, which has actually been done by at least 1 person, though i think it was on his 3 series.
3. get the denison ice link.
i dont have the wiring really hidden anywhere, and the power adaptor is simply plugged into the factory lighter socket, and it kinda gives off a nice green light, which i think goes well with the AC control green lights, and on the fog light switch. getting off track here...
yeah, basically, you'll have to do some creative hiding to make it look like it was never there. i imagine that the denison ice link is a much more complicated install, though will be prettier and neater. that is, if money is not an issue.
i cant think of other ways, though if you go to mini2.com and look at their "interior mod" forums, there are pictures of one guy who totally integrated his ipod into his mini, though the ipod was no longer a single unit at that point. there are many ways. have a look around there. for me, i dont mind a little bit of white wiring running from the glove box to the socket, and the powered ipod and line out is a must. plus, i have the remote attached to the ipod so i can control the tracks and whatnot without much trouble.
