Misfire I think...help please
Misfire I think...help please
Hi everyone, I'm seeking help from anyone that may have or knows about misfiring. I own a jcw r56 and have developed what I believe is misfiring. It has become apparent after tuning it with evolve software. Driving it back in standard mode and no issues so far.
It's still under warranty and have been told the plugs and coil pack are not up to the tune.
If it is misfiring are error codes supposed to show as nothing came up? I'm curious how dealers would attend to the issue(in standard mode) if this issue occurs?
Thanks for your time.

I'm not sure what code cells are, I tuned it myself with the evolve cable plug in. I checked for code errors( I think this is the code cells your referring too). Can't take it back as I'm in Australia and there in the uk.
I should also mention evolve mentioned its most likely the plugs or coil pack and this occurs a lot to minis. I mentioned it never had an issue before your tune and the response is that many minis have this issue and the plugs and coil pack are notoriously bad and people get them replaced under warranty. Car has 8,000km like new. Wondering if this is a common issue? I believe at this point it is the tune that is the issue

The response was it occurs to many many mini owners so I'm under the assumption that they want me to replace these items. But as I said doesn't occur on standard tune so thinking the tune is no good and wasn't money on it.

Yes it will throw codes if it misfires. Here is a list of misfire codes.

Believe it or not, there was someone locally that just tuned their MINI via remote tuning(I'm not mentioning any names- although it's not a bad story regardless) and had a similar issue, as far as the plugs and coil pack comment goes. The dyno shop thought it was the coil pack and spark plugs as well(I don't remember the symptoms) even though the owner just replaced the coilpack recently. Swapping them out fixed it however(IIRC, I'm texting the dyno shop to inquire right now)
I've been driving with Evolve's tune for a while and my car is mostly a track car now. I haven't felt any hesitation related to misfires. I would be sure you're having misfires as those would pop up in the check engine light history.
Ok got dyno shop's reply. Basically the MINI I mentioned was cutting boost after the tune. The tuner said it was probably the coilpack/spark plugs. Owner just swapped coil pack however so they tried troubleshooting. Found out the IAT was just too high(didnt help that the dyno room was hot). Road testing it has been fine and they didn't need to change anything.
In other words, I don't think it's similar to your symptoms. Wish I could have been more help :/

Thanks for the feedback guys, since there are no error codes coming up it may not be a misfire, no codes at all are coming up but there is definitely something not right when the evolve tune is running(need to give it a little more driving to confirm this in standard mode). When your on the power, it occasionally pauses for a split second, then continues on as it was. This is not right and frustrating if I need to replace plugs and coil pack when no error codes come up at all, the response in suggesting its these items need replacing with no issue in standard mode says to me its not a plug and play software tune.. It's now also a get new plugs, new coil pack and hope this fixes the issue and then let us know if its still doing it. Hopefully this issue is resolved by the end of the week, hope I can get a refund.
Just a follow up guys,
The car has been doing it now in standard tune also. Took it to the dealership today and they said it could be bad fuel as a super knock code came up. My response was that it has happened on 2 tanks of fuel from different service stations. They cleared the code and they are writing to BMW to see what the next step is. Hopefully covered under warranty if not ill just purchase the coil and plugs.
