Uh Oh - The Rattle Cometh?

So, the last week or so, I've noticed that the first few accelerations or so, I can hear a soft, clacky rattle. Seems to be on the passenger side. Very slight...not an obnoxiously loud rattle, just a little rattle underscoring the sound of the engine revving up.

My '09 Clubman S is at 48,882 miles. So, if I wait for it to get worse, I'll be out of warranty.

I've got an appointment tomorrow morning to have the dealership look at it. Hopefully, they'll be able to reproduce and fix any potential issues...

There's some other audio clipping in the video. That's not it. It's a deeper sound. FF to 1:52 to hear it, and again at 2:08, and at 2:22. Those are probably the best examples.

You have the video set to private. I can't see it. Is it just me?

Judging by what is presented in the video, it sounds like something else besides the famous timing chain dragging noise, unless you have other evidence with someone revving the engine and taking a video directly in the engine bay.

The cold start sounds like the worst knocking diesel engine you've heard in your life. That was not in the video.

UPDATE: Just got a call from the dealership. They said the Timing Chain Tensioner was the source of my problem and are performing a fix. Sounds like I got it in just the nick of time (or miles, as the case may be).

Yeah...I had 49,920 miles on the odometer when I dropped it off this morning. Talk about cutting it close. LOL.

Yikes! That is close. So are they replacing the tensioner or the chain as well? See if they'll do the chain as well. They will measure it to see if its been stretched but seeing as how they have a "tolerance", a measurement that passes might just be within these "tolerances" and I would rather them change it before you are out of warranty. Frankly if they won't pay for it, I'd still go ahead and pay for it myself(the chain itself) and get it replaced while they have everything removed.

They are just replacing the tensioner. According to the service records for the vehicle, the previous owner had the timing chain replaced at 33,000 miles in June 2011. See: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-thoughts.html.
