Loud Ticking Noise on Hard Acceleration

Hello All,
New here and was wondering if anyone can provide some assistance.
I picked up an '07 Cooper S less than a year ago and just recently noticed that on hard acceleration (mainly first gear) I would hear a loud ticking noise after about 3k RPM.
It will happen on 2nd gear but not as many ticks.
Car has about 50k miles on it.

Thanks for the help.

Checked for proper engine oil level?
Where is the tick coming from?
Does it occur only under load (accelerating in gear) or can you recreate the noise at a stand-still when rev'ing the engine?

Need more specific details to assist.

Where are you in Colorado?

- Erik

Thanks for responding Erik.

Oil level is good.
Tick noise sounds like it is coming from the driver side.
yes, only occurs under acceleration. no noise when revving the engine at a stand-still.
Louder and more ticks while in first gear under hard acceleration and will also do it in second gear but not as loud and not as many ticks.

I am in the Thornton area.

I think this is similar to the problem i'm having. Sometimes when i'm under hard acceleration, between approx. 3.2k - 4k there is a bog down as well as some rattling that happens. The rattling doesn't always occur, but it has more than once on this same occasion.

Are you using lower quality gas?

Ok, sounds like a drivetrain detail, and not nescessarily an engine issue.

laforze - thanks for a better description - more of a rattling.
submit - always put the highest octane that is available (91 in CO).
Erik - i will send you a pm - thanks!

From the sound of what you are discribing you have a bad lifter, lift spring or have rolled cam shaft. I am not an expert on Mini engines but have built SBC with lots of HP and that is what it sounds like to me.

So I went over and visited Erik - thank you Erik - and we tried to duplicate the noise but after driving for about 10 min trying to get the noise to come up, nothing.
The next couple of days I tried to duplicate the noise and still nothing.
Not sure what it could have been. We did notice that when we were looking in the engine bay that the fuse box was broken and was not seated.
Maybe that was it?
I will keep my ears open to see if this comes up again.
Thanks for the responses and thank you Erik for spending the time.

So i'm still having this issue. Again, if I get on the pedal between 2.8-4k the car will bog down at times and there will be a rattling that sounds like it's coming from the under carriage on the drivers side. The thing i just noticed the other day when this happened again, there was a puff of dark smoke that came out of the exhaust. Anyone know what this might indicate?

A puff of dark smoke indicates unburned fuel which would cause it to bog. Sounds like turbo issues to me.

Maybe carbon buildup on the intake valves? Not enough air not getting into the combustion chamber either way.
