Fixed mine this past weekend took around 2 hours to complete and bled it once and no issues. Now I have to replace the clutch as it is starting to slip. Much harder looking repair :(

 

Just replaced my thermostat housing a year (and 12,000 miles) after a replacement had been made. Shop sold me a knock off and didn't replace the water pipe. Pipe cracked and caused all kinds of issues including a separated housing at the seam.

 

I've replaced mine twice on my 2006 R50...but it's been several years now since I had to replace it..

 

mine in my 2012 R55 was replaced @69k miles. It was replaced under warranty though. Just made it by ~200 miles.

 

Question, if I have a 2009 MC, and I ordered the 11537534521 do I need the 12517646145 harness?

 

2011 @ 43k and replacing the thermostat housing with a p0597 error code.

Took my service manager to task (in a polite way) why some engines have a recall but other don't when clearly ALL models have issue with this part. I got a knowing smile.

Question 1: With an obviously flawed part, why would one consider buying another OEM part?

Question 2: With many sellers on ebay selling the part for $35-$38..

Replaced mine three weeks ago with a Circoli part. One week later replaced the faulty temperature sensor which was making the fan run on after ignition turned off, no fault code. Sensor that came with it was brown, replaced with original green sensor. Those original spring clips on the radiator hoses are useless and leak if you try to reuse them. Replaced with Jubilee clips (UK speak). Justa cabrio with 42K miles.

BTW we have a 3 year warranty on our Bremmen part and a 2 year warranty on the Genuine MINI part. Unlimted miles.

Mine is leaking...again. This is the third one in five years. F-ing plastic crap.

 

Which part(s) have you used? Trying to figure out if anyone is better than another?

Right now mine is stuck in an open position so I'm not in any rush to start the cycle.

 

I lost track of this thread and have a question. I replaced my housing on my Clubman with an aftermarket housing and not the OEM. My fan kicked on right after letting it run for 1 minute and stayed on for 5 minutes after I turned off the key.

Is that similar to the issue you had and did you ever get it fixed ? My mechanic says that the aftermarket units are a piece of crap and if I buy an OEM unit, this problem will go away.

I replace my thermostat with an OEM unit and this fan issue you describe occurs with mine. I just figured this is how these cars are designed.

 

The fan on the oem/aftermarket unit will run:

1. If it's very hot ( Like the heat we have in the midwest right now)

2. If the AC is on

3. If there is air in the system (from a leak or thermostat change)


If your car is cold and the fan ( not aux pump noise) runs all the time after shutdown (still cold) check the thermostat for air in the system after a coolant change or thermostat replacement. If not then you have a coolant leak.

 

We stopped selling and installing the aftermarket units awhile ago, we had multiple local cars come back with temp sender faults. Definitely only recommend OE thermostats on these cars.

If you have replaced the thermostat and not cleared the codes the car may still think there is a problem even if there is not, you need to clear the codes from the DME, but if the car is an automatic you'll need to clear the TCU as well, as codes get stuck in there and cause goofy problems.

 

Just received a letter from MINI today saying they extended the warranty for thermostat housings (10yr limited) and will reimburse anyone who had their repaired/replaced at a shop. I just submitted my reimbursement online.

 

Mine was replaced TWICE within one year. I wonder if this recall will be extended to us Loyal MINI owners here in Canada?

BMW/MINI doesn't give two s***s about Canadian owners.

I love my '08 MINI, it's been a pretty good little vehicle. But it is my last MINI. Going forward, I won't be buying anything BMW-related either.

Expensive parts & labour, and dismissive attitude from dealers and BMW "customer service" towards problems or mechanical failures have pushed me away. I've long ago tired of being treated as an annoyance when I've had an issue, tired of being told that "that engine rattle is normal" after the service dep't tried - and failed - to fix it at least 4 times. Tired of reading about recalls or service bulletins that apply to US customers only.

What am I, chopped liver? Yes, apparently, to BMW/MINI I am. Canadian chopped liver at that.

update:
my problems continued until i re-installed the old factory mini sensor into the new t-stat housing. cleared codes and no more issues.

its just my luck, this kind of crap always happens to me

anyone else know about this. I have the dreaded check engine light

 

I replaced the thermostat, pipe, and water pump at 112,000 on my 2009 MCS, that I just recently acquired (at 109,000 miles). The pump was an aftermarket but the rest looked it was the first time. The pipe had melted at the pump end. Upon start up, I was getting error codes for the coolant system. After bleeding didn't do it, I swapped out the temp sender from the new part with the sender from the replaced housing. Fixed the codes and is now performing great. All the parts were purchased from ECS tuning and were supposed to work. They did fit but the harness would not plug all the way into the new sender. There may be more than 1 t-stat housing for a 09 mini-s. I haven't figured out how it got the odd sender.

 

My check engine light is NOT on but I noticed a puddle of coolant under my car. It's a good amount, not a drop or two.

Should I contact my local Mini dealer to see if they'll do the warranty work?

 

Call your dealer. If your car is under 10 yrs older and under 120K miles, you should be covered.

You can also visit www.mini-rp.com to enter the last 7 charactersof your VIN to see if your vehicle is eligible to submit a reimbursement claim. I'm guessing if you're eligible to submit a reimbursement claim, then the dealer will cover you under the warranty.

 

Put my vin number in the link above, no mention of thermostat.

Called Mini of Irvine and set up an appointment for Wednesday afternoon. The gent I talked to could not determine if the work would be covered under warranty.

I'll post more info as it becomes available. Keep your fingers crossed.
