roll call, have you replaced your thermostat housing .
Replaced min at 2500, 4000, and again at 62,000 & 7100. Now it completely over heated and I have to have the head re done. water on the plugs, just one big mess
Had mine done at 138k (two months ago). I paid $250 from my favorite mechanic, (I usually have to chase him down so after two weeks of harassing him he dropped the price on the work). I have a 2011 MCS Hardtop! Running like when I first bought her in 2012.
While everything you listed didn't happen to my 2010 Clubman, I've had some of those and others. As the miles accumulate on a car, one expects problems but with experience we know about how long any given part should last on a good car. I've had two successive new MINIs (also 2003 Cooper) and I have taken great care of them. I drive about 20K miles per year, mostly highway trips. But, the strange problems at relatively low mileage just got to me. The first MINI was sold at 165K and the second at 119K.
I'm ready to leave the German mindset behind and try a Japanese model for awhile so we bought a new Mazda3 iGT hatch automatic a few weeks ago. It is known for reliability and good mpg and has plenty of space for the two of us. The GT has all the bells and whistles of the MINI and more.
After almost 14 years I'm sorry to leave the MINI 'club' and I still miss the feeling of driving one when I see the cute ones in my neighborhood but I'm tired of spending too much of my travel budget on my vehicle. Adios, amigos!
Reporting for "Roll Call" my 2009 non-S Clubman, just flipped to 71K.
SYMPTOMS: CEL with the ubiquitous P0128 scanned at Auto Zone. Other than that, no drips, leaks (that I can visualize) however, coolant reservoir is pretty low. Have my distilled H20 and Mini Approved coolant on board, just in case.....
INITIAL ACTION PLAN:Call to local independent shop - my trusty mechanic has scheduled an appointment for Clubby - he prefers to see/diagnose what is truly wrong vs. (in his words) just "hanging parts" that correspond to the trouble codes that may not always solve the problem
As much as I hate to admit it, I'm reluctantly echoing sentiments expressed by INS1122 & 33EJB. This is my second Mini, my first was a 2006, leased it and was happy enough to purchase the Clubman in 2009. My very well cared for "Clubby" has gone through three full sets of brakes, is on his third batch of tires, battery, all four tire pressure sensors have been replaced, windshield automatic rain sensor no longer works (that quit around 35K). The rear bumper looks like its "rusted" - between the clear vinyl protector and the actual plastic bumper there's an ugly rusty coloured rust pattern that's spread across the entire top of the bumper. I know, its plastic and it can't rust, but it looks like it!
The bulk of my driving (10K a year), is highway night-time driving during midwest winters. I hate having to worry about reliability/cost issues on what I consider to be a middle-aged car. I suppose time will tell, but I may be getting off "das boot" as well.
I had to have mine swapped out to the toon of $785 dollars at the dealer.
It happened the day after I bought my new to me 2011 MCCS and it was not covered by the dealerships 90 day warranty.

How many miles on your 2011. Thought these were covered under emissions warranty ? ( 7 years and 70K miles )

It was handled by the local dealer, Baron Mini. I don't see how it could be covered under the emissions warranty, it's part of the cooling system.
Mine went out at 60,300 miles, give or take.
Looks like its my turn. yellow check engine light came on this morning but was runnign ok. hooked up my Carly BT OBDII adapter. "0x3490 MAP-CONTROLLED THERMOSTAT, CONTROL: LINE INTERUPTION".
Should be a warranty issue right? We are a CPO that expires in June 2017/100k miles (Only at 55k)

Good news. Thermostat repair was covered by a NJ emmessions warranty of 7yrs/100k. Fixed in 4 hours at Morristown Mini
Did mine at 65,000-70,000 miles, at Magic Motoring in Thousand Oaks, CA about 1.5 years ago. Good Mini specialist, fair prices, nice guy. My car is a 2010 MCS Camden, white silver.
Not sure I understand the point of this thread. Most of the MINI's here are 5-6 years....did someone say at time of purchase the thermostats in these cars were a non wearable part / never in need of replacing...? Just seems like its sorta like complaining about tires wearing down, windshield glass pitting, or having to change ones oil...
That said, I guess we can lump in: Front strut mounts, control arm bushings, Harmonic Balancers, Superchargers and hydraulic engine mounts...
What about the tons of melting bonnet scoops out there for the R56-S models ? Thread on that would make perfect sense....
I get the reason for this thread.
To make a point, and hopefully show BMW one day, that you don't make this out of plastic.
Just like the timing chain and HPFP.....bad design. So let's show them that an unusually large number of these things need replacing and it's BS.
2 replacements under 80k for some? That's pure crap.
Many people have to replace this part within a year or two of buying the car new.
I have other cars with 200,000 miles and haven't even changed the thermostat ($20 part).

Me too, but they're not super small cars which have to be put into service mode/drop sub-frame for everything needing replacement forward of the front axles either....
And on my other cars never had to replace front strut mounts, harmonic balancers, control arm bushings or had plastic hood parts melt either but see no threads like this for those parts ?
Someday an entire car will be manufactured from composite plastics, and right now MINI is not only one making thermostats from plastic. Someday at vehicles end life, after fluid drain, battery/Airbag removal, entire car will be shredded with debris sifted into separate piles, then recycled into new car.
It's my belief BMW uses the MINI as a means to beat Café standards set by the Govt. in order to offset those they make with larger engines....= more plastic parts in future for all their small econoboxes commensurate with making those larger cars lighter more fuel efficient....
