My 2005 mini cvt failed today....

Hey guys,

Today as I was driving home from work my car was acting very strange. The car wasn't shifting properly and it was shaking a lot so I called my mechanic right away. By the time I got to his place I was barely able to drive the car....
He confirmed that the tranny is dead.... It only had 73000miles and I've only owned the car for about 5 months....

My question now is what do I do??

Has anyone else replaced their cvt? How much did it cost?
Can you get a rebuilt cvt? Give any info you think would be helpful.

Let me know guys, I'm flipping out right now....

We've replaced many of them. Don't bother with a rebuild they never work, been down that road and paid for it.
Get a new one, or convert it to a 6spd manual.

Gotta ask

First off, sorry for your luck. Let us know how it goes. As a CVT owner I am interested.

Way, I gotta ask. Can you provide some more details on why a rebuild is not viable? I will yield to your experience in this, I am just curious and would like to have more information. Many components can be rebuilt, what makes the CVT one that is not something you want to do?

What am I looking at in terms of price? I can't afford to spend 7000$....
I don't even know where to start...

Do I go through the dealer for the new tranny or are there other places I can pick one up from?

What about buying from a scrap yard?

Are there really and NEW MINI CVT transmissions? Mine was replaced at Inskip MINI with a factory rebuilt. This was not due to a mechanical failure but a non-repairable leak in a housing plug. Warranty Direct covered the cost but from what I understand the price tag was north of $5K complete.

I've been looking around and pretty much all brand new trannys are around 5200$...
I've found one used cvt that came off a car with 100000kms for 3300$.
I've also found a few places that rebuild them and i'm looking at about 4500$ for the full job.

Has anyone replaced their cvt? What is my best option? I'm thinking i'm gonna sell the car once this is over with.

Where do you even buy a new CVT transmission? I've made notes for just in case issues and haven't found anyone that carries new CVT's.
Thanks

Mine is a 2005 CVT also and I've been aware of the possible failure and expense of a replacement CVT. I had looked at WayMotorWorks site and didn't see "new" CVT's.
Don't know where you are located but I have a number for European Transmissions & Parts, located in Cumming GA. 770-888-1499. Rebuilds.
Best of luck to you

Found this:

http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/2816361551.html

And this:

http://www.europeantransmissions.com/

And these guys from England:

http://www.minitransmission.com/

Quite by accident, they seem to get less sketchy as the list goes down. Who advertises something like this on Craigslist? Maybe OK if you just want to get something in the car and get rid of it.

I don't own a CVT, but my advice would be to replace it with whatever you can afford and hold on to the car, and change the fluid about every 25k or so as this seems to prolong the life of the CVT. Chances are the fluid in yours had never been changed.
