fan running after car is shut off
21JCW:
Both!
One of the major functions of oil in an engine is cooling. It is meant to lubricate and clean as well, but cooling is very high on the list... There are many areas that the coolant can't get to - piston skirts, crank, connecting rods to name a few. Without oil cooling, they would fail prematurely.
The water (coolant) is doing just that - cooling...

Eric

As summons said - both while the engine is running. After engine shutdown it is just water.
Cooling Fan....
My wife's 09 Clubman's cooling fan runs for several minutes after engine shutdown. It only started doing this a few weeks ago. My 07 R56 has never done this. Both cars are S's, hers is an automatic and mine is a manual. The SA says that MINI says it's normal for up to 15 minutes after engine shutdown.
So how come it never did this before? Just took the Clubman in for an oil change at the dealer and told them about it....same answer: up to 15 minutes after shutdown.

I have a 2011 MC with 7000 miles. On 4 different occasions there's a fan that runs after I shut down, once was after driving 45 miles and once after driving only 3 miles, today it ran after driving 20 miles. It runs less than a minute. It has been very hot here, high 90's but today it was only 88 degrees. I called the dealer and they said it's normal because of the hot temps and recommended I check the coolant. I think I have a problem with that response.... My basically brand new car shouldn't need the coolant level checked should it??? And, I can't remember having owned a car in the 19 years I've been driving that the fan ran after the engine is off. I know this used to be the case on cars, but anyone else have this happen or am I overreacting???
It hasn't stayed on after shutoff in a couple of weeks. I just find it weird at the random times it would run, some days at temps 95+ and one day it ran on a low 80's temp day.
well, it is back at the dealer again.
Last week the radiator fan had a mind of it's own and the highspeed fan would come on and off after the car was shut off. The car would barely start and ran rough until I got going. The dealer said the thermostat sensor was bad and replaced it. Then earlier this week the CEL came on and the a/c no longer worked. I took it in and waited on it while they "diagnosted the problem" and loaded new software for 4 hours, wtf are they using to load it a 386 or something. Well, after 5 hours sitting at the dealer, they gave me a loaner. They called me last night to get my permission to drive my car home so they could further diagnose and check the problem....right. The service is as bad as the cars are I mean come on Mini. I have lost faith in the Mini and the ability of the dealer to understand and fix the cars.
