fan running after car is shut off
I have a 2011 MC with 7000 miles. On 4 different occasions there's a fan that runs after I shut down, once was after driving 45 miles and once after driving only 3 miles, today it ran after driving 20 miles. It runs less than a minute. It has been very hot here, high 90's but today it was only 88 degrees. I called the dealer and they said it's normal because of the hot temps and recommended I check the coolant. I think I have a problem with that response.... My basically brand new car shouldn't need the coolant level checked should it??? And, I can't remember having owned a car in the 19 years I've been driving that the fan ran after the engine is off. I know this used to be the case on cars, but anyone else have this happen or am I overreacting???

Perfectly normal. Did this on my '09 justa and does it on my '11 clubby S; particularly on hot days (> around 80).
I'm not positive, but i think it is a function of both engine temp and ambient temp. For example after running the car easy and immediately after a half-mile down-hill coast in gear (which will quickly cool down an engine), after shutting it down, the fan will still run on hot days.
On the flip side, on cool days after a hard run, the fan will run after shutting it down. (there's also a quieter whine after shutting it down that sounds to me like a small oil pump that is perhaps circulating oil through the turbo - would be interested in other thoughts on this)

Even my '05 S does it. Its perfectly normal, I never even realised it either until I drove down to Nashville in '09.

My 02 MCS did it for the first time that I can recall after climbing Mt Washington a few weeks ago. Totally normal when the engine experiences higher heat stress than normal.

Jeez, doesn't anyone still RTFM?
OP, your car is COMPUTER CONTROLED. It isn't a manually operated car. Pressing the OFF button doesn't really turn it off. It tells the computers to make the engine stop running, and then turn off pumps and fans when it's safe for the engine.
It's normal vehicle operation and clearly explained in the owners manuals. REMEMBER that this is a GERMAN car. GERMANS read manuals and FOLLOW directions...

TBH I do read every thing I can about my MINI. For most things the manual is the last resort.

So, I read the manual when I got the car. It was just a little more convenient that I thought about it while I was on here yesterday to ask fellow Mini owners. And, isn't that the purpose of the site? Do I have to refer to my manual for every question? Ok, so I'll just be a voyeur in the future instead of being criticized for asking a simple question. Thanks everyone else for your help, this is my first German car so I'm wet behind the ears when it comes to their engineering.

there are people here who will dig for hours and hours thru the available documentation (and some not available) to find an answer to your question. When your answer is on page 5 of the owner's manual it appears to us as sort of a "my time is more important than your time" comment.
Yes, you may think you saved time asking here
"we" may think, you are too lazy to read what you were provided.
It is an English car .... check where it was built.
p.s. you have a MINI
I have a Mini and a MINI
I believe there is a difference despite the fact they were built in the same factory ... and a similarity too

I don't understand the hostility and just meanness I take from that. I'm not getting into a war with you so I'll say this and this will be it. I'm new, I'm not lazy. I searched for it before I asked, I didn't find anything pertaining to what I was looking for. I have 20 something posts, not 2,000 so I'm learning the site and I don't navigate through it with ease. Instead of belittling, try guiding because you obviously are a veteran to all things Mini and MINI.

no hostility
you just asked me to spend more time than you were willing to spend to answer your query
if the answer is in the book . . . well, didn't it take MORE time to post the question here versus reading the book in the first place?

Close. It's a water pump circulating water through the turbo.
Remember: When ALL ELSE fails - then read the instructions.
I have say I am a manual reader and I always try and find the info I need from the documentation provided by manufacturer. BUT the Mini is the worst owners manual I have had.(48 new cars)
Very little info for DIY. Just try finding the capacity of the oil system and basic stuff like that.
I so glad that the Bentley shop manual is coming soon and already preordered from Amazon.
As mentioned the fan noise is normal, it's over 90 here everyday, both Minis fan run after engine shutdown.
My $.02 worth.

Thanks for the clarification! The sound of coolant to the turbo as it spools down / cools down is sheer music to my ears!
