So lately I keep getting a CEL and it's throwing the 1776 and 700 codes. What's interesting is the light only comes on when the ABS and Traction Control lights come on. I live in Tucson and noticed all of those lights come on when I'm driving over hills or roads with lots of dips. Yesterday as soon as I went over a hill, all of the lights lit up. Is this the infamous wheel sensor issue?

Symptoms:
All lights mentioned light on hilly roads but later reset once the car is turned on and off. CEL remains on for a day or so then resets.
Transmission seems less responsive, particularly when downshifting to 4th. There is a delay from when I press the paddle to when the car downshifts and it's very snappy.
No other issues or indications. Braking and driving are not impacted in any other way.

Questions:
Can the wheel sensor cause the transmission issues?
Are the ABS and traction control lights a separate problem from the transmission?
If these are unrelated problems, how do I troubleshoot the ABS issue?
I'm assuming a transmission flush and filter change would fix the slipping 4th gear shift. Am I correct in that assumption?

For P1776, sounds like ABS/speed sensor. Read this thread for a similar issue: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...76-1776-a.html. I would start with this issue and repair as necessary, then reset the CEL and see if P0700 comes back.

For P0700, possible you have an issue with the transmission solenoid (assuming yours is automatic). Here's some info: http://freeautomechanic.blogspot.com...ode-p0700.html.

 

Thanks for the info and you are correct, I have the automatic. I'm beginning to think these are two separate issues. How often are we supposed to have the transmission fluid/filter changed on the mini?

Is it possible the ABS sensor issue is causing the transmission problem?

 

I had both of these codes last year. The problem turned out to be a bad wheel speed sensor. After replacing the bad sensor, I cleared the codes and it was good to go. Your car is running a little jumpy because it thinks it only has 3 wheels.

One thing to note though, the wheel speed sensors for the front and rear wheels are different, so check the circuits to see which sensor is bad before ordering a new one.

Thanks. That's what I needed to hear. I don't have time to really troubleshoot but I'm almost 100% sure that it's one of the front sensors. Went ahead and ordered two front sensors. We'll see how that goes.

So both of the front sensors have been changed and the trifecta of lights no longer comes on, however the transmission is still jumpy and it hangs when shifting in and out of 4th. I don't own a scan tool so I have not been able to do a reset.

Could the fact that I have not reset the computer cause this?? Or am I looking at another issue? No indications whatsoever, just a jumpy and hanging transmission.

i also got P0700 read out this morning. i have a 2006 MCSa and SES, ABS, DSC, and the tire reset buttons came on last night. advanced auto parts did the read out code and said it was P0700, Transmission Control System. based off the above, it might be a wheel speed sensor. do you know how much yours was to replace? thanks for the advice!

 

I believe I paid around $130 for both sensors on Parts Geek. Changing them yourself is easy. Remove the tire and loosen or remove the wheel well plastic and you will be able to access the sensor. You will probably need a couple zipties and I belive a 5 or 6mm Allen Wrench.
