Common Problems

All,

I have a few questions about the common issues people see with the R56s.

1. Are the timing chain and tensioner issues directly related to the "cold start problem"? If so, the 2011s are supposedly cured of this?

2. What are the symptoms of the "carbon build up" that I have been reading about? How do you know if/when you have this problem?

Thanks!

The cold start rattle was timing-chain-related. The 2011's don't have a timing chain, so we assume the problem is solved.

I can't help you with the carbon build-up question; haven't experienced it.

No timing chain?
Then the 2011 engines have a belt?

I prefer the chains. The problem was to do with the tensioner that allowed the chain to loosen and stretch out requiring replacement. I have mine replaced at 15,000 miles.

The 2011's use BMW's Valvetronic/Vanos system in place of the normal timing setup. It uses neither a chain nor a belt.

I am confused: this is a link to the 2011 double vanos on the bmwusa site

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...ble_vanos.html

It certainly looks like a chain to me.
