Hi Guys, I recently decided Id like to purchase a mini cooper s convertible. I found one that fits the bill and was hoping someone could point out to me the common problems of this model and if its a fair deal or not. I go to look at the car tomorrow so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Personally I would avoid the auto transmission (with Paddle Shifter?)... BUT if you get it, the NEW line of thinking is transmission filter and fluid change between 100 and 120K miles.
It is a very well equipped car, and I do like the two tone cockpit.
What sort of history does the car have?
And do you have an independent tech that can look at it for possible problems?
The most common are, front strut mount bushings, lower control arm bushings, Motor mounts, and with the R52, the rear belt line trim, each side is about $145.00.
I'd second the Auto trans. Not that they're time bombs, I just trust the manual trans more. The best thing you can do is take it to a qualified shop and have a PPI done. It'll be the best $100 you'll ever spend. There are a number of things that wear out on R52s which will need replacing, so having a good idea of the scope of work will help you negotiate.
Other items to pay attention to:
Canvas care - the two best products are 303 and Ragg Topp.
Serpentine belt about every 30 - 35K
Power steering hoses.
The little button on the upper left side of the boot where the door makes contact. May need a little slider pad. The switch piston was never long enough.
Use only dry lube on the top scissor joints.
Install front strut tower plates to protect them from mushrooming. (nuts torque to 25#)
The thermostat housing should have already been replaced a couple of time so you shouldn't have to worry about it.
Use ONLY top tier 91 or better octane or risk knock sensor failure. http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers/

Most of all, remember that topless motoring is motoring at it's best.
