My cupholder swings like a monkey in a tree

Hello, all. Not that this has anything to do with the post, but, for those of you who remember, I used to be LynnEl. Allas, the Lynn & the El have parted company. I have also returned to the ranks of MINI owners, albeit, this time its just a Cooper. Well, anyway, now to the point of my post: The car is equipped with the Mini add-on cupholder. You know, that monstrosity attached to the right center console post, that looks like a kiddie potty. It's loose. It swings left and right with every turn. Is there any way to tighten the damn thing??? It looks like there is some sort of screw holding the cupholder to the bracket, but it facers down and I can't tell if there is a screw of some sort holding it on. Can anyone help. I'm about ready to just rip the damn thing off.

Is it the OEM one (has chrome cage) or is it all plastic? If all plastic, it may be the minifini one (although does not usually swing much) if pushed all the way into bracket.

I had the same one in my '06, I know what you are talking about. It sucks, I couldn't get it to stay put either, so I just ripped the damn thing out. I don't drink and drive anyway

Also, welcome back! Nice Cooper!

I removed ours because when it swung to the left it would push climate control buttons at random. I simply removed the top and bottom rubber parts and spread the rods and removed the metal parts from the mounting. Easy peasy.

I wasn't worth a dang holding anything anyway, on a hard turn either direction whatever was in it would fly across the cabin. Worthless add on in my opinion.

All plastic

It's all plastic. It appears to be all the way in. It swings around easily enough to be essentially unuseable. Is there any way to tighten it? Anyone? I may just get rid of it, too. Thanks for the welcome back.

It's a friction fit - my (uninstalled) unit has significant detents. Best bet would be to shove a rubber plug into the bottom of the pivot arm to give it more contact with the detents. Unless it's worn them down from swinging back and forth...
You can remove the cup portion by squeezing the bottom of the cup pivot and lifting up to check the condition of the detents.
