I went to the local Sears and picked up a regular 36mm socket for a 1/2 inch drive ... works like a champ. It was 'shallow' enough to fit back there even with the torque wrench. Best part ... cost less than $4.

Cheers

I just went to sears and bought one there...it doesn't have to be shallow...as long as it isn't the deep...the normal ones will work fine...bring in a wrench and your MINI to sears...grab one and ask them if you can check to see if it fits...that is what I did - they let me take it out to my car and check before I bought it. A shallow would give you a bit of more room but with mine I can still get in there just fine. I couldn't find a craftsman one that fit, can't remember the brand I got - I'll double check tonight.

I bought a 1/2 inch drive 36mm from Sears, may have been the deep well because it was about 2" deep. Cost as I recall $5.99. Took it too a machine shop and had them take 3/4" off, cost $3.00. Works fine and, with hindsight, would probably been Ok without any machine work because I ended up using a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter inorder to use my 3/8 drive rachet to remove and 1/2 drive torque wrench after re-install.

I got my 36mm at Sears also, standard depth socket. A 1/2 with an articulating head works like a dream for clearance, also bought a Sears.

that was me getting the stanley large metric 1/2" drive socket set at walmart. they have "flank drive" and the whole set cost about $15.

right, the walmart tool section isn't like sears, but hey, i got flank drive sockets, mobil 1 oil, popcorn, grape juice, and razor blades all in one stop! so there!

Sears was out of the 36mm so I went to Home Depot and got one.

My local Sears store did not carry the 36 mm socket, so I'll try Home Depot. BIG question: is the Sears or Home Depot socket hexagonal or multi toothed? I prefer the hex socket because it fits the drain valve nut without chewing out the corners of the nut. Thoughts on this, anyone?

P.S. the Samstag website shows a shallow 36mm German made socket intended for Mercedes (but good for any 36 mm nut size), but it is quite expensive at $20 something.

Correction: I meant the oil filter canister nut, not the drain valve. Still thinking of the Fumoto oil drain valve which I purchased.

I think the Sears is multi-tooth but, no worrys on chewing up the canister nut as it isn't torqued that tight... just about 1/4 grunt

I did the same last weekend, Sears Hardware sold me the normal length 36mm socket, 1/2" drive, 12point for $5.99. I used my normal Craftsman 1/2" socket wrench and there was plenty of clearance.

I bought the Mobil-1 at Walmart in a 5qt jug, it was cheaper than 5 1qt bottles and once I put in the new oil I had a handy jug just the right size to hold the old oil for recycling.

I tried searching Walmart for the elusive socket set but none to be found here.
