Fuel filler door lock frozen

Hey all....this is my first winter in the 04 MCS.
When I unlocked the car this morning, I noticed that the fuel filler door was
still locked. Picked up some de-icer to spray on the little lock mechanism
and tried to open and close the locks several times...but it is still locked shut.

So I tried the emergency latch release in the boot....and the handle simply
snapped off in my hand as I tried to pull it back.
Anyone have any ideas?

The same thing happen with our 03 way back when...even to the snapped off handle....I can't remember but I believe when they replaced the snapped pull..... the mechanism was replaced and that seemed to take care of it.
