no key lock for glovebox?
no key lock for glovebox?
I just got my 03 MCS. Of course, i'm having the glove box issue of it popping open on San Fran's cratered-moon surface...my question is, am I suppose to NOT have the ability to lock the glovebox?!?!?
this would be the first car i've ever owned that didn't have this feature. from the diagrams I see, it should be right behind the glovebox latch.
is there a way to add a lock?

I just got an '03 about 2 months ago. Yea, the glove box doesn't key lock.
As to it popping open, I was able to greatly improve mine (has only popped open once since I did this).
Remove the glove box and door assembly from the dash. It comes out with just 5 screws. Once out, notice that the latching mechanism is basically a hook on the door and a bar on the top of the box. The bar's exact position is adjustable by loosing its two mounting screws.
At first, I thought the problem was that the hook wasn't wrapping around the bar all the way. So, I figured I could solve this by adjusting the bar all the way forward. Bad idea. It would then pop open if a mouse sneezed within 2 miles.
The correct adjustment is to have just a little friction between the hook and the bar when closed. It seems that the reason it pops open is that the hook bounces and when it bounces, it releases. With just a little friction, that friction keeps the hook from bouncing whenever you hit a bump.
BTW, you can play with adjusting the bar with the entire assembly removed form the car.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find the link to the good DIY on the retrofit right now.
You can retrofit a newer 1st gen glove box, which you can order from your dealer. You'll also need to have them match your current key, which is probably going to make it more not cheap.

Do the locking versions have the same issue as the non locking ones with regard to "popping open"
It can still pop open. The loosely spring-loaded hook can still bounce when you hit a bump. The lock just keeps the handle from being pulled.
However, let me add that from my reading here, simply getting a new glovebox assembly, one with or without a lock, helps with the popping open problem too. I am unsure if the new ones have the "bar" better adjusted (see my 1st post), or they started to use a stronger spring on the "hook".

My 03 MCS without the lock would pop open and I had to remove the box and adjust. After adjustment it never popped open.
My 06 MCS with the lock has never popped open even over extremely bumpy roads. I do not know if the later models are just adjusted better from the factory or a minor design change was made but it stays closed.

AS previously said....some cars depending on the year got the lock, some did not. Your problem is not not having the lock...if it did, and you locked it...it would still open!! It is the latch..it is broken, or misadjusted...
The solution is to either buy a new/used glove box, or modify the one you have to make it work!!
I hate to direct folks to another thread on another site...bit in this case, this one has a solution for you...IF you choose to not buy a new glove box!!

I checked out some options last night online, and noticed it's a semi-common issue.
A new replacement glove box unit is $175. That seems a bit pricey to fix the latch, though it is an option.
People had different issues with the glove box it seems... some had loose springs in the latch assembly, others has a problem with the "catch" loosening on the glove box itself. Legit fixes were reported depending on the problem.
Most people McGuyvered a solution using velcro, bungi cords, or otherwise. I opted to go this route.
I inspected my glove box and found that the latch assembly was fine, but the "catch" seemed to be really loose. I took a bit of foam rubber, cut it to form, and super-glued it into the catch. This wedged the catch in place and solved it from being loose, and also expanded the overall size of the catch itself, so the latch had more real estate to hold on to. So far, so good... Prior to the "fix" it would open on it's own all the time. Now, it's been secure for about 2 hours of drive time. If the foam rubber wears down or comes loose, I have plenty more!
