Transmission failure on 2006 Cooper S automatic - any other ideas?

I have a 2006 cooper S (automatic) and an independent shop said they thought it was some sort of output shaft speed sensor? but then i took it to the dealer and they said it was a mechanical failure in the transmission and that would cost me $8k to fix. ($6k for the part and $2k for the work).

The car has 96k miles on it...and i owe quite a bit since i just bought it a year ago from the first owner.

not sure if i should get a new transmission, buy a new car, or are there any other options out there?? any people who know how to fix these things besides just getting new ones? is there a way i can get a warranty to cover it?

i really do enjoy this mini ...

Go to a tranny shop...it will be much less than the dealer.
The "S" transmission is a pretty standard one by most accounts...so a good shop should be able to rebuild it or repair it for much less than the dealer!!

I'm not sure how to find a good tranny shop down here. i live in orange county, ca.

the dealer and three independent mini/bmw shops keep telling me that no tranny shops do them. they said they don't rebuild them and to get the new "part" from the dealer alone is $5900. i just want to know what other people are doing out there...

There are lots of online used car part wholesalers... In the old days they were just called junk yards, now they are 'parts aggregators'... You can most likely buy one online and have it shipped to you for much less than the rebuild...

The dealers answer to what has gone wrong with your transmission is too vague. It could be as simple as removing the transmission and getting into it to find the broken part and fix it. Just to look inside and really find out is going to cost a few bucks.

If you really want to keep this car it sounds like you will have to invest some money into getting all the needed repairs done. In order to have it to a point where you are not wondering if something else is going to fail it may be that you will have to do all the repairs.

Please note that it has fairly high mileage but it does not mean its dead.

So, deside if you want to keep it and invest in the repairs; then you will know the history. Or, buy something else used and roll the dice with another unknown . . . . . . . . . . . .

Maybe to find a transmission shop, contact CSAA or AAA insurance as they have recomended shops for their members.

Then get on the phone and start calling the shops.

let them know you have 06 Mini Cooper S with a transmission problem.

Find out how much it will cost to find the problem; at least you will know if they are willing to even try working on it.

Another thought is to contact local Mini Clubs in your area, as they may have a place to recomend to do the repair.

Good Luck, and hope it all works out OK !

+1 to independent shop. '05 and '06 MCS' have the Aisin automatic transmission, which has nowhere near the issues the older CVTs had. If you actually had to get it replaced, there should be rebuild shops around. A value of $8-9K should only be for the CVTs because no aftermarket companies picked it up.
