Radiator Fan Test

Hello,

My AC is not working, been broken for two years, the ac compressor solenoid is the problem. I have a new compressor, condenser, dryer, sitting on my bench plus a new supercharger and water pump, gota love yur mini to put up with the problems. Approaching a 100 000 miles so being pro active with the supercharger and water pump

My question the rad fan has always seemed very load when it runs,(must be on high) the low speed I think has never worked. At the moment when I turn the ac on the fan does not come on , the ac press is low and that may be the problem, I am guessing not. Does anyone know how to jump the low speed switch to confirm it works, hate to order a new rad fan if not required. I plugged in an OBD 2 reader, the reader showed zero codes. Going to do the job all at once.
thanks Phil

The low 'switch' is actually a resistor. When it fails, no low speed. The only way I know to confirm it isn't working (while AC is dead) is to get the engine to 221deg F - if it doesn't go on, it's dead. The high speed will go on at 234deg.
Do yourself a favor, and get a replacement fan. It's a VERY common failure, as you might read in the other thread. You can get one for less than $100, and if you're doing all the others, it just makes sense.

This is not a scientific statement and you are free to ignore it. But here goes.

Your MINI has 100,000 miles. If the fan has not been replaced, my bet is that the low speed is not working. Fact is that I am sure that most MINIs at that mileage have non functioning low speeds and the owners do not know. They also have broken shock mounts and trashed lower control arm bushings but that is another story.

Since you will be in Service Mode I would change the fan. I got one from Rock Auto for $80 and it was essentially identical to the OEM one I took out. While you're in there, for $80, it seems to me like the way to go.

95% of the time when you don t have stage 1 on the fan its the resistor inside the fan housing.
