door detent not working, how to adjust?

hello all

the detent on the driver's door of my '03 MCS isn't working, how do I go about fixing or adjusting it? By detent I mean the mechanism that keeps the door open when you open it (almost) fully, until sufficient inwards pressure is applied to overcome it and the door swings closed.

My Mini had some major bodywork done to it when it was virtually new (1200km, long before my ownership), and I am slowly finding things are aren't quite right, this being one of them.

any info appreciated.

That device (aka the door strap) is not adjustable. The part you see between the door and the jamb is 'sandwiched' between two springs inside the door that press through ball bearings on the detents on the strap. The springs break, and the unit must be replaced. Not expensive and not difficult, but you do have to remove the door liner. I know all this from personal experience.

Part #4 needs to be replaced, as was said above.

I had the same issue with my drivers door brakes on my 2003 R53, so I purchased two new ones. However the new ones I ordered look much different and cheaply made than the original, did they change the part for these? These new ones are OEM from Morisstown MINI, so its not like they are aftermarket, but they still seem really cheap looking to me.

Wow, that's really strange. I changed out one on my sister's R50 just a couple months ago with a new OEM one and it looked identical to the one it was replacing.

Is the braking mechanism the same on the old vs new? It doesn't seem to be the case.

I haven't taken the other one out yet, but was your sisters the same as my original? Or like the new replacement one I have?

I bought a new door brake with the intentions of installing it myself, but I ended up getting it done at the dealer at the same time as a few other things. The dealer did mention that there were two different kinds, one metal and one plastic. Not sure how accurate that description is, but it would indicate that there are two different parts out there. I believe that the year of the Mini specifies which part is used, but I could be wrong.

The new door brake made my car feel much newer and less like a beater; its nice when a small repair gives you a big tactile result....now if I could get my "Mini flu" fixed I'd actually like my MCS again.
