Scratched glass from wipers, covered by warranty?

Hey,

Title says most of the story. I have a scratch on my rear window that appears to be caused by the wiper. The scratch is right it middle of where the blade wipes. My car has 7000 miles on it, and I have not taken it in for service yet (blades are still original). I am going to head in to the dealer today, but I wanted to get an idea of whether or not I should expect this to be covered under warranty?

Thanks for any replies!

If you have an OEM blade, and an OEM window, I don't see why it wouldn't be covered. Unless it very clearly isn't caused by the wiper. Like say, if the scratch is in the top left corner of the window, where the blade doesn't touch.
But you said its right in the middle of the blade travel, so you should be covered.

If it's clear that the scratch is from a metal part of the wipers scraping on the glass, you should be covered. If it appears to be from road debris getting caught on the wiper and getting dragged across the glass, there is no way warranty will cover it.

The bottom line is whether or not it can be considered to be caused by a defect from the factory.

This is the perfect answer by far. From the blade material itself - YES. From foreign road material that just happened to get caught between the wiper edge and glass - A BIG FAT NO!

This is that time of the year where MINIs of the northern climes are prone to having ice form on the wiper blades during snow/ice precip events. If it happens, don't continue to use the wipers without stopping and clearing off the blades. All that crap that the trucks apply to the road surfaces gets sprayed up on your windscreen, embedded in the ice formed on the blades, and does a number on the glass surface.

I wasn't sufficiently attentive my first winter. It ended up taking me 5 grueling hours of glass polishing to get the scratches out.

Back on topic and as mentioned previously, if this is the source of your scratches you're on your own...

I haven't had time to take it in to the dealer yet, but after further inspection, I think I am screwed. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the wiper blade.

I am going to take the car in for new blades all the way around, and I will see what they think.

Major bummer!
