^ Ugh. I saw some oil near where I parked my MINI the other night. I sure hope I don't also have a leak.

Did anyone else see that JD Power said MINI owners report the most problems of all car models? I'm getting nervous, my fellow MINIons. I have a 2009 S and I still get a CEL every few days: on for 20 sec with a slight power loss (I drive in sport mode), then it goes off and all is well. The dealer can't find the issue; it's too intermittent. *sigh*

or

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_engine

Prince is the codename for a family of modern automobile straight-4 engines developed jointly by BMW (Mini Cooper S , Mini John Cooper Works, Mini ClubMan) and PSA Peugeot Citroën ( 207 THP, 207 RC, 308 THP, 308 GTi, 3008 THP, 5008 THP, 508 THP, RCZ, DS3 THP, DS3 Racing, C4 THP et C4 PICASSO THP, DS4 THP, C5 THP ). It is a compact engine family of 1.4–1.6 L in displacement and includes most modern features including gasoline direct injection and variable valve timing.
For BMW, the engines replace the Tritec engine family in the Mini. PSA has started to use the Prince family in place of their TU family — the Peugeot 207 being the first car to receive it.
The engines’ components will be produced by PSA at their Douvrin, France, facility, with Mini engine construction at Hams Hall in Birmingham, England. The joint venture was announced on 23 July 2002 with the first engines produced in 2005. The Prince engine project is not related to the Prince Motor Company.
In late 2006, an extension of the cooperation between the two groups was announced,[1] promising new four cylinder engines, without further details.
On 29 September 2010, it was announced[2][3] that the 1.6T version of the Prince engine would be supplied from 2012 to Saab for use in forthcoming models, primarily the 9-3.
In Geneva auto show 2011 , Saab unveiled their latest concept vehicle Saab PhoeniX with BMW Prince Engine 1.6T 200hp

WOW! If anybody needs encouragement to take it in the first time they hear the "rocks in the engine" sound, read below.
I never noticed any noise until last tuesday morning. Then heard the 'death rattle', lasted for a couple minutes, went away. I talked to the dealership, who said to bring it in Friday. No issues, got car back today.

Service Description of problem:

" Rattle coming from chain. Slack @ 70 mm over followed. cracked chain guide rails. T/S tried chain tensioner first. Rattle was still present. Removed valve cover and found guide rails chattered and cracked. Replace chain, guide rails, tensioner, and R&I oil pan to remove pieces of guide rail from oil pump filter. Reprogrammed complete vehicle.

death rattle,

Erbair, I really don't forsee you having any other issues. The problem had to do with a chain tensioner bolt that occasionally backs out. Then causing the chain to stretch. That rattling noise was caused by the chain slapping against the upper chain guide. They probably installed a new washer, bolt along with the chain repair to stop it from stretching again. However, don't be surprised if the oil is low in your mini or it's real cold, that you hear the noise again. It is a oil fed tensioner, and if pressure doesn't build fast enough during start up, it could do the death rattle for a sec. or rocks in the can rattle sound, which ever you want to call it. It doesn't neccessarily mean you have a stretched chaing again though. Atleast that is my thoughts.

Had an oil leak from the turbo which was fixed (may not be related). Still had a rattle, almost out of warranty so I took it in. They looked at the bulletin, measured the chain and it was out of spec so replaced it and associated parts. Car has been quiet since.

Picked up my car today after taking it in for hood scoop and 'death rattle' issues. Dealer fixed both under warranty as usual but I thought it might be helpful for everyone if I listed what they replaced on my invoice in relation to the 'rattle'...here goes:

"Diagnosis found insufficient timing chain tension causing engine rattle noise concern....Performed SIM110207; Performed Steps 1-13 and timing chain measured results @ 69mm. Removed and replaced timing chain, chain guides, chain tensioner, slide rail, chain sprocket and fasteners. Performed vehicle programing update. Verified repairs and results OK."

If anyone wants a list of the part numbers replaced, I have those...just let me know. BTW...I love my dealer (Niello Mini in Sacramento, CA)...excellent communication and excellent service!

My car was repaired in Dec '09 and the only differences I can see in parts used were different 'gasket rings' - 118523 and I also had a 'shaft seal' listed with the same part # - 118523. All else still the same - tensioner and chain included.

Minijonny, Just realized the numbers you listed are not the part numbers. The part numbers are the numbers listed first on your invoice. For example the tensioner number on mine is 11-31-7-597-895. Please relist your part numbers so we can see the latest numbers used. Thanks

Blackmagic, the tensioner used on my MCCSa was the same number as yours. The work was done in 3/19/2010 and my Clubman had 21233 miles when they did it. They only replaced the tensioner. I currently have 39500 miles on the car. Just waiting for the noise to return. It has been 18k miles, since they serviced it. Lets see what happens.

MiniJonny,
Thanks for updating your parts numbers. The only significant difference I see from mine done in 12/09 and yours done in 05/11 is a different timing chain. My number was 11-31-7-534-784. So it appears they are still using the same tensioners. I wonder what's different with the chains? Anyone know?

Won't be able to pick it up untill next week I hope it's the new timing chain...

Does this sound like cold start rattle? Does anyone else hear early stage knocking of a potential problem... or am I just being paranoid?

Add me to the list.

Model: 2011 JCW
Build Date: 5/2011
Miles: 1824
Duration: 5-8 mins
Frequency: First time today.
RPM range: 2000-3500
Ambient Temp: 58 Degrees
Oil: Castrol Synthetic 5w-30(Still from the Dealership)

I was wondering what it was like to have no power, with all of the other posts, now I know. I noticed it was jerking to the stop sign and thought it was because I let the clutch out too soon, but as soon as I turned the corner and gassed it, that there wasn't any power. So I thought pushing the "Sport" Button would solve it. Nope. all it did was spool up the turbo and released it to the atmosphere. There was a lot of "Popping" and "Gurgling". After getting coffee i checked underneath the hood. Dipstick didn't pop out. No oil on the engine bay. Oil level was good, wasn't dirty. Started her up and she was fine. Sport engaged and was zooming through the parking lot.

So I guess warm up the car then to rectify?

Does anybody know if BMW's engines are this fickle?

This problem is still not solved? I first saw this phenomenon a few years ago. Have been somewhat dormant on the forums and I see this is still going on? I would have thought BMW would have solved this by now.

What gives?
