When slowing for a stop....

We have an 2010 MINI S with auto transmission. Since I drove a manual transmission MINI S I am not sure this is a normal or problem.

Actually I love to drive the auto transmission, however when slowing down for a stop (almost stop) the car surges forward (I am not sure what to say) and this happens less than 5-10 mph and my foot is on the brake. Is this a normal?

Yeah, I'd say that's normal. I've got an auto '09 and I've noticed the same thing. Once you're used to it, you'll forget about it. I believe I've seen others with the same opinion on here as well.

My friend learned about the surging issue the hard way. She was slowing down almost to a full stop when the unexpected surged occurred. The car surged forward and hit the back of another car. The repair bill was almost $3,000 for her 2010 Clubman S. Her Clubman had only 700 miles on it.

I was riding in the passenger seat when this occurred. We didn't know what happened until I did some research here.

People say the surge happens on the automatic S model with the Sport button activated.

Mine does the same thing and its annoying. Its not related to the sports button as mine does it in any mode. It seems to be minimized when in shift mode and you don't downshift to 1st until after the car stops.

Just a guess (never drove an auto MINI) but it could be over pressure when the torque converter unlocks.

The dealer told me it's a normal occurrence with an automatic.

The mechanic in our family agrees that it is the torque converter and is something that should be looked into.

BTW, zemina, great color choice! You should come check out the Sparkling Silver Owners' Club thread.

My R32 (dual clutch) surges when coming to a stop if it downshifts into first gear. I don't remember my auto S or non-S loaners doing this however.

Exactly, our 07 has the same issue. We got used to it after a while. It still does it and thats 40000 miles later. We think its part of the cars character, it always wants to go!

Been driving an 06 mcsa for two weeks. While in D, it is just downshifting on it's own. when it hits 1st gear at 2 or 3 mph it hops..

What I am trying to get past is, I am decelerating in M3, I go to shift into M2 and at the same time the car shifts on it's own so I go into 1st and hit high rpms in split second , not fun.. if anyone was on my bumper they would have nailed me
..

I'm learning at this point
