I skimmed some of the cold start rattle/chatter thread and it appears that they are not talking about the same thing that I have. In my first start of the day--temperature doesn't matter so far--there is a one second slightly high pitched whine when the motor catches. It's as if the starter keeps going. There is no rattle or clatter.

It doesn't happen during any other start during the day.

I searched "whine" in this forum and didn't come up with anything.

Does anyone else experience this?

If you are talking about a whine right after pressing the start button, I experience the same thing almost every morning when I start up but haven't thought anything of it.

 

I figure it has something to do with the push button start and starter.

 

I have same sound with my "09 Mini. One year old now 10K mi. and whine has stayed about the same. Wish it didn't have it but car starts and runs great.

 

I think it may be the high pressure fuel pump delivering fuel to the DI system upon startup. My 09 does this for about half a sec, always has since day one. Way less unnerving than the BANGBANGBANG of the cold start knock, so I pay it no mind.
