More than just the hood scoop melted during test drive [video]

It happened on August 8th, 2009 in Sunnyvale California. I went to test drive a 2007 CPO [Certified Pre-Owned] Cooper S from the MINI dealer. After about 20 minutes' drive, the hazard lights started to flash without a reason. Pulled over the car on a parking lot, and started to see smoke coming from under the hood, then fire.

What did the dealer say to you after this?

Glad you got out before the fire.

It wasn't me. I quoted the description on YouTube. Think he took out another test drive after getting back to the dealer?

Allright lets have a contest on what you would say to the salesman right after the fire was put out.

My submissions:

1. I hate to see what the Chilli Pepper Red one will do.

2. I'll take it!

3. Ummm, don't call me I'll call you.

4. Will you go below MSRP on this one?

No problem. Certified Pre-Owned cars are covered by MINI NEXT. From the MINIUSA website:
Introducing MINI NEXT - the official program that guarantees your Certified Pre-Owned MINI will motor as crisply as the first day it rolled off the line. To make the grade, a MINI NEXT car must be less than five years old, have less than 60,000 miles, and pass an extremely rigorous inspection process by certified MINI technicians. Then, because we'll always stand by our work, we cover every MINI NEXT car for up to 6 years or 100,000 miles and we back that up with the 24/7 MINI NEXT Roadside Assistance Plan.
All he needs to do is call MINI Roadside Assistance and have it towed back to the dealer. That dealer might even let him have a loaner while it's being repaired.

Does anyone else wonder why you'd go on a test drive with a video camera? And isn't it rather coincidental that he stopped that far away from every other car? Then again, could just be fate.

maybe MINI will replace the entire car with carbonfiber parts so it doesn't happen again. CF body panels, upholstery, glass, everything.

Do it for the children....

Possible explanations: Cell phone camera and he could have pulled away from other cars when things started going pear-shaped.

I dunno for sure but I think they are good guesses.

What's your theory?

I bring my point and shoot digital camera everywhere I don't bring my SLR. It shoots HD video.

But yeah, the jelly effect makes me think it's a cellphone.

I'd like my car a bit less crispy, thank you very much.

I'm sure that the salesperson chalked this up to "normal" as with the cold start rattle, sticking sunroof, heat in footwell, chirps and creaks from the dash, etc!

ROFLMAO!!!!

Customer: Does this happen a lot?
Dealer: No, you must have rev'ved it above 4000RPM before the break-in period was done.

I guess MINI still has a few bugs to work out of the electrical systems...

I wonder what the previous owner knew about this?
