Replacing 3rd brake light
Replacing 3rd brake light
Hi all,
So recently I noticed someone broke my 3rd brake light...
I plan on replacing it, but I was wondering how I would go about replacing it?
Is there a place where I can get step by step instructions or does anyone know?
Thanks for any help!

just saw this. What car do you have? Everything except the just a Cooper with Spoiler is very easy. Three screws inside hold it in place. Unscrew them a 1/4" and push on the screws to break the rubber seal. That is the hardest part. We do these all the time at amviv when we install our Pulsars.
If you have a Cooper with Spoiler, then it is a royal PITA. You have to loosen the spoiler (two 10mm nuts at each end under rubber caps plus lots of glue in the middle) and it takes two people. One to push up on the spoiler and one to get the light out before you rip the spoiler off the car.
One thing for everyone, if your light is not working, check for corrosion at the connector that attaches to the light circuit board. It is rare, but I have seen a couple.

That's correct. The S has a different spoiler which has enough room for the light to be easily removed. The non-S spoiler is smaller and so much more painful. Scares me each and every time we do one. I feel I am going to break something.
Ditto what GoMiniGo said about the installation difficulty on the Just-A-Cooper w/ spoiler. Once I realized it was impossible for one person, it took two of us plus a lot of groaning and informal English to replace mine.
Lol awesome! I am having trouble disconnecting the wires from the light!?!?! A dont want to break any of the plastic on it, so ive been kind of gentle on it. Does it require quite a bit of elbow grease to get off or am I just an idiot!?! Thanks!
Thanks for this thread. I just realized yesterday that my 3rd brake light is smashed out. I have an R50, but luckily I have the S spoiler, so I should be able to do this solo. Where can I order the light assembly?

I picked one up from Wayland at WayMotorWorks....I did mine last week!!
The glue holding on the red lens failed, and the lens flew off to parts unknown.....I was able to swap it out in about 10 Min max. Just make sure you have a set of Torix bits. WayMotorWorks did have 3rd brake lights in stock....pretty good price compared to the dealer too....just not on his website....so call him and ask!! He does have lots of parts that are not listed...some new, some used, and can usually save you some $$ over other options...and get some good, honest advise!! I had mine in 3 days (all the way in NH, regular shipping!!)!!
I did the install on my S alone.....a bit of a pain, but do able....just push the entire unit out once the 3 screws are removed by inserting the torix bit or screwdriver through the hole where the crew came out....the little gasket on the back of the lens will keep it in place till you give it a little push!! When you go tore-install it, if you put a short piece of tape holding the lens in position, it will give you time to line up your first screw without having to hold it in position. Like I said, 10 min job...easy...or at least with the "S" spoiler!! And if you hate tailgating SUV's...get the go-mini brake light pulsar (it flashes your 3rd brake light when you first apply your brakes)....installs at the same time...a great little item!! I love mine. Way sells them too!!
