Redline recommends their MTL for the 6-speed, and I've always used it in my 2002 MCS.

+1 on Redline MTL. I have been using it in my 04 MCS for about 35k and am very happy with it.
I change every 25k and after that short of an interval it looked almost new.

Hmm... Its a transaxle (tranny and diff). Transaxles sometimes require 90 weight oil. Check the recommendations in the book and buy an oil that meets those specs. You might also want to search for past threads on the topic.

I frequent these forums and have seen either Amsoil MTSF or Redline MTF for the Midlands 5 speed which carries BMW-MTF94,therefore those oils cant be compatable for the 6 speed Getrag which carries a different oil to the midlands

I use AMSoil 5W-30 Synchromesh MTF in my '02 with chopped inertia weights and short shifter in order to shift quicker than with the stock fluid and hardware. With stock hardware and oil I would beat the syncros all the time, but now it's an exceptionally rare occurance. Of course there's a chance my tranny may wear out at 450k miles instead of 500k, but I'm willing to accept that.

Good point, I've been thinking the same thing. Redline maintains that MTL is fine for the transaxle, but I've thought of changing to their MT90, which is a 90 weight.

Good luck shifting your tranny in the winter with 90wt lube. Redliine MTL is the lube to use.

I would not do anything more than a MT90-MTL mix of one qt each. As said above MT90 will be a problem in cold climates and MTL works very good.

The Getrag uses the MTF94 also, so RL MTL is fine. That's what I'm running...

Not according to BMW,Getrag6 speed 23007533819-MTF-LT-3.
Midlands 5 speed,23007577804,MTF-94.
Two different oils, therefore how can Redline MTF be correct for both boxes.
Info from realoem.com

I use Redline MTL and it improved shifting, even on the below zero mornings this last winter.

but what box are you using it in 6 or 5 speed,i am thinking that the Redline Amsoil is fine in the 5 speed but not in the 6 speed.Facts dictate that the two trannys carry different oils therefore one oil cannot work for both.Amsoil have told me they do not make a compatible oil for the 6 speed but do for the 5 speed. As far as i know Amsoil MSTF and Redline MTF are the same correct me if i'm wrong.Even if i am wrong one product cannot work for both gearboxes they carry different oil.

I don't know where you got the "BMW" info, but it's not mentioned in my owners manuals anywhere. My Bentley does say that the MTF94 is used in all the manuals both 5 & 6 speed. Many people here are using the MTL or the OEM MTF94 in their R53s (that means 6 speed) without issue, so I don't see how either is going to cause you any problems.

Based on BMW's TIS recommendations, it would appear MTL would be appropriate for use with the OEM LSD. MTL is the same visocosity as MTF-94 which is recommended for the Getrag 6spd with LSD (and pre 7/04 non-LSD models), LT-3 is a lower viscosity (like ATF) and recommended for the non-LSD for models after 7/04.

This was copied from a recent BMW TIS.

5 spd Midland up to 7/2004 MTF-94
5 spd Getrag Convertible from 4/2004 MTF-LT-3
Saloon from 7-2004 MTF-LT-3
Convertible from 9/2006 MTF-LT-4

6 spd Getrag GS6-85 BG/DG
Up to 7/2004 MTF 94
From 7/2004 MTF-LT-3
With LSD from 1/2005 MTF 94

6 spd Getrag GS6-55 BG, GS6-53 BG/DG
From 9/2006 MTF-LT-4

Per Redline:
I checked with MINI and they did change tranny fluids for 05 to MTF LT-3. I have an 06 GP w/LSD
Here is what Redline told me:

Felipe,

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in your MINI manual transaxle the MTF LT-3 fluid is called for and as a replacement I would recommend the D6ATF.

The MTL is a higher viscosity than used in the late model, it was used until July '04, after that a lower viscosity fluid was used. The limited slip is likely either a gear type or viscous and wouldn't require anything special in the gear oil.

Regards, Dave
Red Line Oil
