Dislocated Shifter ****

Anyone else have their shifter **** come off during heavy acceleration? I had this happen a couple of weeks ago, and found it very disconcerting. It slipped right back on, but geez, I'll never hold onto it quite that firmly again. :-)

A plastic flange inside the **** holds the stock shift **** goes into a groove on the shift lever to hold it in place. Gluing it may be a bad idea as the dealer may need to remove it to perform some repairs or service.

If you want a **** that is held in place more securely, get one of my wooden *****, or Doug Whalen's stainless steel *****. Both use a stainless steel adaptor machined by Doug.

You could always get a Whalen Shift Machine and take care of that problem

FLKeith,
I just used a light duty glue, works fine and can removed easily if necessary by anyone. If you are under warranty, have service dept fix it. No need to buy another **** !!!

ktrout - wow! If that ever happened to me, I would take it to the dealer to get it fixed, and also file a formal complaint with NHTSA. This is certainly a safety issue. Your vehicle's controls shouldn't come off in your hand while driving!

This is a fairly common problems in BMWs. Specially the M models, I would imagine it's because the more enthusiastic acceleration available in the M model

I find that once it comes off, it will come off again and after a few times, it becomes easier and easier...

Gotta love that precision German engineering! They build some of the most sophisticated engines in the world, then can't get the shift ***** to stay on!

You guys must really hold on tight to it or something. I remember test driving a used honda once a long time ago with the same issue. Being aggressive with the shifter probably increases your risk of misshifting because you loose the feel.

Easy there He-Man, you're just trying to change gears, not arm wrestle the car! The R56 has virtually no shift effort, use an open palm and your shifts will be significantly more precise...and you won't end up yanking it off during your "red mist" moments.
