Sunroof does not open when it's warm out
well thanks for keeping us posted!
So has MINI actually put out the service bulletin on this and do they have an official repair?
Please say yes, I have a finite amount of time before it starts snowing in the passes in the mountains...
Thanks in advance!

I am also having this problem. Plus the one-touch on the sunroof doesn't work consistently. Someone else mentioned this in a previous post- could these things be related?
I'll have to send an email to my MA. Anyone have experience with Rasmussen on this one?

Oh gotcha. Yeah, I have noticed that part.
Yep, last time I was in for service they said they we're aware of the problem, and had a fix for it. I think they replaced my seal and did some adjustments. The attempted fix did not work, if anything it's now just as bad or maybe even a little worse. I have to push on mine to get to open when it's hot out, and when I hold the button down to close it, it just pops right back up. It usually takes me 2 taps of the button to close it. I go back in for service this Wednesday, so I'll ask about it again.
Still No Fix for the Problem ?
I had to read 14 pages and over 330 posts to learn there is still no solution to the sticking sunroof issue! My daughter reported that my wife's 2007 R-56 coupe's sunroof stuck when she tried to open it after we had been on vacation in mid-summer and the car was parked outside all week. I didn't think anything of it.
Today I tried to open the sunroof on my one-day old JCW Clubman that I picked up from Rasmussen in Portland yesterday and guess what......it wouldn't open. Thinking it was a fluke, I nudged it and it opened. Coming inside later this evening, I went online only to find this thread. What a disappointment. A brand new car that doesn't work properly. This sucks!

Just a quick update. My SA sent me this in regards to my inquiry into what was the delay of getting my MINI into service.
I apologize on MINI's behalf. They made an announcement that we have a fix but failed to have the parts available. I have an ETA of 9/18/08 for the special grease and spacers.
I am bringing my MINI in on the 19th. We shall see....

I see you're from Silicon Valley (same city where my company's corporate offices are). Just think of it as a bug. Wait until they release the first service pack.
OK THERE IS A TSB AND A FIX. Spoke to my service Dept dude and there is a kit of stuff, however it is on backorder, but I am on the list, in fact I am the list!.
And as a reminder there is a TSB for the sunshades as well.

Thanks! I will add both TSB's on my todo list.
i have an 06 cooper and it seams like in the last few months the sunroof has suddenly started slowing down during opening and closing. its not very hot out here... 58-86 f for the last several weeks. the problem is pretty much constant... its like it takes twice as long for it to finish running. also, every once in a while, it will stop while closing, and sometimes reopen...
has anyone had any issues like this - im gonna call the dealer soon, i need new breaks too, so ill fix both issues at the same time

This thread focuses on a product defect in the 2nd Generation MINIs so we're probably not going to be able to help you get yours fixed as well as the folks in the 1st gen forums can.
Good luck with that sunroof! I know I love mine and I'm miserable when it's not working right.
It's not going to help.... the TSB is nothing more than lubing and an adjustment.
Well, at least it didn't help mine. (which I predicted before it was brought in)
There is definitely an issue with materials. It seems that the heat causes something to swell and thus causes the problems.

Ok people there's a solution to the SUNROOF from HELL!!!!
The Bulletin just came out last week and it supersedes the previous one from june...
Hope it brings peace to all of you sunroof lovers!!!

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M54 03 08 dated June 2008.
designates changes to this revision
SUBJECT
Sunroof Will Not Open at High Temperatures
MODEL
R55, R56 (Cooper and Cooper S, Cooper Clubman and Cooper S Clubman)
SITUATION
At high ambient temperatures, typically above 90 degrees, the sunroof may not open from the fully closed position. When this occurs, the rear edge of the glass panels will rise by about 10mm and then either stall in that position or close again.
Assisting the glass by pressing upward on it, or allowing the sunroof to cool slightly, will restore normal function.
CAUSE
The blocking protection feature of the sunroof drive is being activated due to the presence of higher than expected frictional forces in the sunroof cassette. Such forces are only present at very high temperatures and are caused by a lack of proper lubrication, along with incorrectly adjusted glass panels.
CORRECTION
Adjust the glass panels and perform the recommended lubrication procedures.
Do not replace the sunroof cassette for this situation.
PROCEDUREIf the sunroof is binding at a position other than when it's first starting to open or at significantly lower temperatures, a sunroof cassette problem may be present. Normal diagnostic procedures should be followed for these cases.

CORRECTIONAdjust the glass panels and perform the recommended lubrication procedures.
Do not replace the sunroof cassette for this situation.
PROCEDUREIf the sunroof is binding at a position other than when it's first starting to open or at significantly lower temperatures, a sunroof cassette problem may be present. Normal diagnostic procedures should be followed for these cases. - Perform a short test and ensure that no charging system or battery-related problems are present.
- Remove both the front and rear glass panels per Repair Instruction RA 5410240 (front) and RA 5410250 (rear).
- Measure the gap on the left and right side of the cassette, between the rear edge of the wind deflector base and the leading edge of the sliding mechanism.
- If the gap on the left side is equal to that on the right side, continue to step 4.
- If the gap is not equal, remove the sunroof drive per Repair Instruction RA 6761515.
- Move one of the sliding mechanisms by hand until the spacing is equal on the left and right sides.
- Install the drive and operate the sunroof to ensure that the sliders move together.
- Use Kluberplex adhesive spray grease to thoroughly coat and lubricate the areas identified in the attached document.
- Install the glass panels and adjust per Repair Instruction RA 5413002, with the following exceptions:
- The front edge of the front panel should be 0.5-1.5mm lower than the roof line.
- The rear edge of the front panel should be 0.5-1.5mm higher than the front edge of the rear panel.
- The rear edge of the rear panel should be 0.5-1.5mm higher than the roof line.
- Do not replace the perimeter seal unless it is damaged.
- Initialize the sunroof with the engine running, per Repair Instruction RA 5400...
- With the sunroof fully closed, hold the sunroof close switch at the first detent for approximately 20 seconds. Continue to hold until the sunroof completes one full cycle.
- Cycle the sunroof at least 5 times to allow the lubricant to penetrate all moving parts of the sunroof cassette.
good to know!
i've had an issue with it popping up and back down, but then when I hit the button again it goes no problem. Honestly, I don't care. But it's good to know that if I do have issues in the future, mini will do something about it.

you are welcome. i replaced many sunroof casettes this summer as the engineers and PUMA were telling us to do so... but it was just the same part going on...
we knew it was only a matter of time before they decided to pinpoint the problem and fix it properlly. instead of having us replace the same parts...
just print my post and take it to your dealer and have them look it up online.

) the MINI sunroofs are not one touch....
