Sunroof does not open when it's warm out
While I can appreciate that a) they're busy and b) it works for your particular schedule, I think that to tell a customer that just bought a new vehicle that they'll have to come back in almost a month JUST to switch out a set of wheels and tires.... THAT'S RIDICULOUS!
They may be busy but swapping out a set of wheels and tires won't take 20 minutes... surely to keep a brand new car customer happy, they could have squeezed in an appt. in less than a month.
Fortunately, my bodyshop does all the work for the Acura dealer right next door. Because they are owned by the same people, I called them and asked if they wouldn't minding switching out wheels and tires.
I explained my situation to them and they sent the parts truck over, picked up the wheels and tires, I drove into their bay and in less than 15 minutes, I was on the road.
I'm just afraid that if they are so busy that they can't accomodate a new customer to swap out wheels and tires without booking them almost a month later, what's going to happen when I have a real problem.... eg. my sunroof not working correctly on my brand new car.
I'll call them tomorrow but I get the feeling I will have to drive 4 hours to a dealer in SC that is much more personable and I have heard EXCELLENT things about some of the techs there.
We'll see...

Called the dealership this morning. (checked on a JCW kit install....
They said they are waiting for mini to come up with a solution and they have had numerous other cases.
He did say however that in a few instances, they loosen some bolts that they believed were swelling in the heat and forcing the motor to go into safe mode.
In those few instances, some have had success, some continued to screw up.
Not much we can do except wait...

OH, I PLAN ON DOCUMENTING EVERYTHING.... I called the dealer and spoke to someone in service... and of course, they had never heard of anyone having that problem.
Even though I don't want to relinquish my car for any unnecc. time, I want it documented that there is a problem and I WANT IT FIXED!!
I don't think that's being unreasonable, this is a $30K car, there is no reason why the owners should suffer with an inferior BMW product and accept it because it's considered a "quirk".

Good luck everyone else...I hope they finally get it fixed.
Dude: We should just email the link to this forum to all the Mini Advisors for a little reality check. Mine seems to be working fine. But it sounds some have had success...but nothing definite. Mine worked again yesterday in 93 degree heat...so I think my sunroof is solved.
Good luck everyone else...I hope they finally get it fixed.

I understand that every car has issues, there is no perfect car however, I just think that when someone pays top dollar (I mean, face it, we love our cars but 30K for a little car like that is a LOT of money) something as simple as the sunroof should work.
It would be one thing if it was only a few cars here or there but it seems the more I check into it, the more prevalent the problem is. You'd think Mini would be diligently working on this. (and perhaps they are...)
Anyway, glad you got it fixed, keep up updated.... if anyone gets a fix and it stays fixed, let us know.
Mark
That's great to hear.... let us know when it hits several days of 95+ degrees.
I don't know about your sunroof but I've never had problems when it's 90 or below. It seems when it's like 94 degrees and up.
Nonetheless, glad yours works.

Mark,
For better or worse, we don't get a lot of 95 degree days in Western PA. In fact, we were lucky to get a couple of days of sunshine in a row.
In any case, so-far-so-good.
I'll be sure to post back if it hangs-up again ...
Peace !

TSB on this
2007 MCS with about 6k on it.
Just took mine in and there is apparently now a Technical Service Bulletin(TSB) out for this problem.
I was told there is no solution out yet, but the band-aid is to drive a little to cool off the car and/or gently push on the glass to help it up. (Insert joke about viagra for sunroofs)

Brian,
Did you get a TSB #? I've had this happen twice on my brand new 08 MCS. Normally I park in a garage both at home and at work and don't have a problem, but if parking in heat can cause it, I can do that. I live in Texas. Heat is not a problem. I'm planning on putting this on my issues list for the first service. It'd be nice to list the TSB# to the SA.

LOL, I'm sorry, I should have looked from where you live. I moved down from OH so I know what you mean...lol.
Keep us updated.... I bought one of those carports with the vinyl tops you see at Costco and park my car under it while I'm at work. Point is, it doesn't have the sun beating on it any longer so I haven't had a chance to check it out lately.
Thanks for the update, hope we can all get a fix.
On a side note. Today I happen to stop at the dealer and was telling my MA about the sunroof not working in the heat. It just happened that this conversation was happening in front of a service advisor and she was listening to our conversation.
She then proceeded to tell me that they haven't had that problem in years and she hadn't heard of anyone recently having that problem.
I just rolled my eyes.... I mentioned that three other people I know of had brought their cars to the same dealership with the same problem within the last month or so. She must have been off that day. Mark
TSB for sunroof inop in hot weather.
I searched NHTSA's website but apparently that bulletin isn't published yet (as per their site disclaimer, not all bulletins are posted by companies). I'm guessing since this one doesn't have a solution yet (this is what I was told by the Service Advisor at the dealership) that it probably won't be published until a solution exists.
The Bulletin number as noted on my service paper is "Bulletin 54 03 08" and was listed as "Under Investigation" with "No Solution At This Time".

Admittance to a problem is half the solution.... sounds great to me, at least they're working on it.
Way to go Mini....

Yeah I am... at 400 and some dollars a month....
Uhhh, they weren't playing....
My Second 'non-opening' Sunroof Event
{From (my) Post #215}<...>...will wait for a 95f+ day ahead and run the test again and report what I see, if I get a 'stick' I will start the engine
(takes ten or so seconds for alternator to come on line) and see if having 14 Volts available makes a difference. <...>

Using Key Fob resulted in both glass panels rising about a ¼ inch and immediately closing again.

I then started the engine and had same result from overhead toggle. Drove four miles with three brief stops and Sunroof would still not open.

I ended at a Shopping Center parking lot and spent 1¾ Hours shopping and sky was clear with same 95f direct sunshine,
but this time the Sunroof opened to 'vent' position with Key Fob.

So, (as others have also reported) the issue is very intermintant, but definitely exists although considering my usual 'covered' parking,
I might never have experienced it without the above 'tests'.

I will report this to my MA and add to list of 'Warranty' (intermintant 'Gear Icon', 'TPM' and one 'Dead Battery') items
for my scheduled "Maintenance Event" of May 2009 and hope that a 'Serv-Bull' fix is found and proven by then.
huh... and i thought my car was the only one with this problem. the day i took delivery of it back in 07, the roof wouldn't open. the MA and SA gave me some crap about it being glue left over from the plastic the car was wrapped in. i punched it a few times, and it opened. to this day, almost a year and a half later, i still have the problem on occassion. i'll have to mention it again at my next serivce appointment.
The service dude showed me the TSB today, the temporary "fix" is to either wait until the car cools down, or 'gently' help the glass with your hand, both of which cracked us up. And if you are having trouble with your blinds staying closed, there is a TSB for that as well(replace the shades). So I will wait and have both done at the same time, whenever that is!
The service dude called me today regarding my report of problems with my sunroof. I got the impression that my car was the first one reported with this problem at my dealership (he didn't say so directly, but he seemed very surprised that I was having the sunroof problem) so if there are others of you that bought your MINI at Northwest MINI with this issue and you haven't called them yet, call them and let them know! The more reports they have, the faster they will be able to solve the problem as they find more things in common with the cars that have malfunctioning sunroofs.
I was told that MINI USA is working to resolve this issue and they are aware that there is an issue. As soon as they have a solution to the problem, my dealership will call me and schedule an appointment for a repair. He also told me that they are keeping my report on file with their information about my car, so that when it does get fixed, it will be fixed under warranty.
I'm really glad that he didn't ask me to be a guinea pig for experimental repairs, given that I live so far from the dealership and I am also really glad that they called and let me know that they are going to fix it as soon as they know what to fix.
So far, +1 for NW MINI!
I've only had my car a couple of months, but I have to say I have never had people work so hard to make me happy this long after they had my money in their pockets.

the TSB is correct no solution @ this time. Working on a repair. In the mean time enjoy have fun with your Mini. Put a little pressue on the glass let it open. Don't fight its all good. Before you know it. There will be a fix and your Mini will be perfect. Just like this perfect world we live in.
The only option is to replace motor which they dont want to do if it was eassier and cheaper than that all our sunroofs would be fixed already. I ve had everything including a motor replaced. The glass is the only origanal part. Stop being cheap (u no whats)!!!!!!! Mini do what u need to do.

checked out, and the SM mentioned that there IS a TSB now and there's instructions to NOT work on any sunroofs until a solution is created.
