Does it not work at all, or would it work if you gently pushed on the back edge of the glass?

I do let mine cool down before I open mine, so I haven't run into this problem yet. But when picked her up, I asked the MA about this problem and he said if you put slight pressure on the back edge of the glass it should work and is a MINI recommended method. I took this to mean just barely pressing, if it took force there was something wrong.
As I mentioned above, knowing this is a weak spot, I've always let the car cool down 3 to 5 minutes before I've attempted to operate the sunroof. So far no problems - but def keeping an eye on it.

A couple weeks ago it was starting to get warm, after a long cold spell. Darn sunroof wouldn't open - for about 6 tries. Each time I activated the switch the roof would half-pop,a nd then close. Finally it worked, and seemed fine for a few days.

I took the MINI in for maintance last week and had the roof checked out as well. They told me it was "bent"!?! What? It's been working for over a year, so how could this be? No real answer, but they lubed rails and pivot points and adjusted the glass. So far so good....

So, I take it there is still no "official" fix for the sun roof problem? I have an appointment next week and want them to fix mine since its in the 70's here now and it is starting to refuse to open on me. I'd prefer a fix and not the work around of pressing up on the glass while pushing the button.

When it closes after trying to open, it's a pretty clear sign something is wrong. Some of those pieces are fairly thin, it wouldn't take much to deform them over time. How much use does your roof get. I don't open mine much and only on cool days after driving a bit, so I don't have a good idea of the strain the mechanism is under.

Just for comparison, did the 1st Gen cars have similar sunroof issues? Wondering if this might be fixed with the re-fresh expected in 2010.

I have a first gen and a second gen, both with sunroofs. Never had a problem with the first gen, just the second. I had the R56 in for service yesterday and asked my SA if there were any new fixes out for this, since I had it addressed a few months back. He said no, and asked if it was acting up again. Since it hasn't been hot for a while, I told him no, but since its supposed to get into the 80s tomorrow, I guess we'll see.

Last time I went for service (New Transmission) I told them my sunroof sticks. The service guy told me they had some new lubricant that helps the problem while I got the car back and they completely ignored my request the fix the sunroof. I don't mind the problem I just push on the sunroof the same time I hit the button works for me.

That seems to be the recommended fix! Just be gentle.

Yes I push as well but if you want to roll the windows down and open sunroof w/ the FOB then you can only open the windows!

Hmmmm.....maybe not a good idea. I've never tried to program that on the MINI. Is that standard on all models or just ones with specific options?

On the bright side, next year is the R56's 4th model year. That means in 2011, they'll come up with a new style model and hopefully they'll fix the sunroof issue in it.

Come on 2011....

Mark

I think a majority of owners have this problem and chalk it up to being one of the quirks of owning a Mini.

My experience over the past two years with build quality has been pretty bad. I do have to add, that it is still a very fun car to drive.

Enroute to the dealer now to trade my 07 MCs in....luckily they are also the BMW dealer....hopefully I'll be lucky enough to leave my problem child behind.

Just curious, what is your next car going to be after you trade in?

I've done the push technique as well, but on very hot days I can easilly roast my finger tips when touching the glass or edge.

If you hold the unlock button on the fob your windows roll down...after they're down if you continue to hold the sunroof opens as well.

it should work for all models.

The deal is done

I have had a weight lifted off my shoulders.

Just picked up an 06 330i (sport/prem/cold and a few other goodies) for my MCs trade. They made about $200 off the deal but I essentially got a brand new car. It's only 17K miles on there and it's a CPO good to 100K miles.

We currently are driving an '08 MCS as a loaner while Molly is at the Dealership. It was Mid 60's yesterday and the Sunroof would not open at all. Hubby is NOT happy!! I was hoping that driving an S will get him thinking about an MCSC as a replacement for our other car.
