Of course, I mentioned that I'm aware of MANY others with the same problem and that the same group of people have also had their sunroofs repaired as outlined in the TSB, only to have the same results. He asked "did you read that on northamerican-whats-it.com?"

At least MINI is READING these threads, and I actually got a high ranking employee to admit to reading!

Many thanks for sharing this. The non-functioning sunroof when the sun is on it is frustrating indeed. I find it implausible though that still to date, there has not been a better effort on Mini's part to address - and find a permanent solution - to this sunroof issue.

He didn't say what the design function of the capacitor was by any chance? Curious!

Took my car in

Had a few niggling problems with the car, and the sunroof issue was one of them. My MA told me that even though there was a TSB about the sunroof sticking issue, it didn't really solve the problem. Well, we're gonna try it anyway and see what happens. We've had quite a few extra-warm days around here lately, so as soon as there's another one I'll check to see if the sunroof gets stuck or not and report back.

wow, congrats! what else was wrong with it besides the sunroof issue? I mean, there had to be more to it than that, right?

The capacitor is most likely there only to reduce the brush noise that occurs when the motor is operating.

If the motor is working at all then the capacitor is not shorted. I wouldn't go tearing into the headliner just to cut a perfectly good part installed for a reason. This is not the cause of all the sunroof sticking and unsticking that the cars are having.

Problems with sunroof

I live in Mexico and I had the same trouble with sunroof.....It doesn't open on warm days and has a terrible noise. If you have this trouble, go to the dealer! They know about this issue and must to change it. The new one is the second generation of sunroof, they say: This sunroof has modifications to avoid the previous issues. Now I have a new one installed and I don't have issues yet.

Mine too, even at 25 degrees

My 2008 R55 still has the no open issue even during the winter cold.
I occasionally like fresh air even at 25 degrees.
My Sunroof fails to open without assistance about 80% of the time.
I live at least 125 miles from my Dealer and wouldn't mind driving In if I felt the "Fix" was "THE FIX".
Is there just the One TSB on the Sunroof or more?
Can someone list them, so I can be prepared when I call?

The fix

I went in last fall to get the fix and it worked pretty well... well at least it worked after they serviced it. Since then it has not been 100% reliable.. most likely 60%+ on the first flick. After working with it a little I can get it to go in about a minute. Not an ideal situation but that is my experience. I wish I had better news.

Since it is still below freezing here, I haven't been able to test it out, but last week I had the car at the dealer and mentioned this problem. They took out and realigned both glass panels and sprayed a $25/can lubricant on the seals. The rear glass panel was not level with the body, being at least of an 1/8" below when shut. They look a lot more even now so I will have to wait and see if their fix works.

Mine looks Very level and has the problem.
You can still test yours in the cold, just don't leave it open.
Mine fails always fails if it has not been used for a few days.

Well, it was mid 80's today and my car was sitting in the sun. I went to open my sunroof and guess what??? The freakin' POS didn't open.

I hit the button a couple of times and started to drive down the road. Less than a block later, it worked.

This is ridiculous and now that summer is approaching, I'm sure this thread is going to get longer.

I can't believe Mini doesn't want to fix this.

I guess they'll do what they did to the older Mini's with strut tower mushrooming issues... NOTHING until a new model is made.

Other than that and my melting carbon fiber hood scoop and my engine that sounds like a diesel when it's cold outside, I love my car.

My Mini is at the dealership as I write this. My sunroof wouldn't open at all. The dealership installed "the fix" but it didn't cure the problem so they are replacing the entire mechanism. I hope that this will be a permanent fix for me but after reading this thread, I'm not holding my breath!

I think orangecrush had a thread on this, I believe he had it prepped and painted. Mine is just the standard CF no defromations or blemishes!

It didn't really melt like the original one but it does have two slight deformed imprints where it attaches from where they attached the clips on the backside. The imprints weren't there when I installed it.

It's liveable with (since I don't have any choice at this point)

Louise goes in on Tuesday to get the "sunroof cassette" replaced. The sunroof cassette is everything but the glass. I hope that fixes my sunroof issues.
