06 MCS stalling problem

My fiancee calls me yesterday saying that her car stalled out in a parking lot. She tried to restart and it would not. So I head over there, just as I get there she calls me and says it started.

She followed me home and she said it ran fine. I pulled the battery cables to let the ECU reset.

She just called me and said it did it again in the garage as she was leaving.

This car is bone stock besides a K&N.

Anyone got an idea where to start looking?

without any kind of info it sounds like a fuel delivery issue. if you are mechanically incline you can check the fuel pressure but you are still under warranty so i'm not sure you wanna mess with that.

She took it to the dealer and they said they could not duplicate the problem.

When I saw the work order on what was wrong, they put it in as stalling at idle. Which is not what the problem was. But they kept it overnight.

I guess we will see if it happens again.

it just did it again this morning.

Car was parked in driveway on slight angle, it would turn over but not start. Spent 10 minutes trying to get it started with no luck. Pushed it out into the street where it was level and started cranking it again. I engaged the clutch slightly as I tried cranking it and it finally started.

It did go in to Mini for this problem, but they could not duplicate it.

this is a known issue...our '05 and our '06 has it. It starts and then stalls right away. Or, if it starts, it runs rich and sounds like crap. As a matter of habit now, I turn the key on to build fuel pressure before turning it over. If it does start to sputter, I shut it down right away and wait a few seconds, then try again. It's never left me stranded, but the dealer will never duplicate it...seems to happen after sitting overnight and only randomly (hot or cold weather).

There's a HUGE thread about this somewhere....been happening for years to MINI owners, across model years and ECU revisions.

I turned the key on too see if I could hear the fuel pump prime up, but really couldn't tell if the pump was coming on.

Well this sucks!!

Well did it again this morning.

Stalled and died at a red light. Blinker flashing like it was out (fast I am assuming) and her dome light came on.

I am keeping a record of everytime this happens. Date, time, and what happened for MINI. So they can see what is going on.

Fiancee calls me 10 minutes later and says it died and won't start at all now. She is going to call the MINI roadside number and have it towed to MINI. She is fed up with this already.

for good reason. stalling at a light is not what the normal problem is, at least not for me. stalling at start when the engine is cold is the issue. was the car warmed up and driven for awhile when it stalled at the light?

Yes, she drove it approximately 4 miles to get to the light when it stalled out and then another 6 miles to the daycare when it died. All this within 10 minutes of each other.

did she start it up cold and drive away, stalling 4 miles later? and the again right after? or, did she give it a minute to warm up? the issue seems to be vapor lock or something similar that throws the ECU into closed loop where it runs like poop

she gets in it and pretty much drives off, no real warm up time.

she also told me that when it died at the daycare, the side fender lights were flashing real fast. Like maybe something was shorting out.

Well MINI called and......and.......(you guessed it)

They can not duplicate the problem. But they only had the car for right at 5 hours. My fiancee told them they were not to release it to her till they found the problem, cause she no longer felt safe driving it on the highway.
