Bonnet Heat/Deformed Scoop

Ok...my bonnet has always been extremely hot after driving.

However while cleaning Ruska tonight I noticed that my scoop is deformed...roughly right in the middle of the top part and is slightly dipped in...about 1/8 inch in an area roughly the size of a silver dollar...

It's fairly uniform towards the back..the only thing I can come up with is that the plastic melted a bit?

It's happened before to others , mine is slightly warped not enough to bring it in yet . My dealer said the bonnet is not too hot and if it is too hot it's normal !My dealer is Crevier .

It's too hot to touch...even briefly.

It heats my garage up at night (Garage has AC).

I have one of the early builds with blocked off vents.

If it melted...it's to hot. Make them fix it...

If you don't have holes in your 'functional hood scoop' I would get the dealer to install it. the air flow does make a difference. Mine is a May april build.

I guess that it is only a matter of time before the lawyers at BMW put a sticker on the scoop, warning not to touch it.

Yeah, like McDonald's coffee. We know it gets to around 300 degrees on the outside hood, I remember the guy with the laser thermometer tested his.

Common sense would dictate that coffee is hot, if for nothing else than for the public exposure that this coffee case got years ago. It's a cultural thing.

Reasonable expectation that a muffler would be hot is to be expected as well. But can you reasonably expect that a car hood (*ahem* Bonnet) is hot enough to blister skin?

I'm not abdicating either way, just posing the question.

Agreed...I would venture to guess that at least one of us would be told by MINI "Gee this is the first complaint we've received, regarding this".

Way TOO HOT

We notice the extreme when we designed our Uber Hood scoop for the R-56, we over laminated the bottom because of this heat factor, We have not had one of ours go bad yet, but we are watching closely. Alexander mini told us there are several issues including the hot bonnet, over coated hose sealant which is melting because of the heat also....Geoffrey, Palo Uber Mini

Question for MiniDivision

MiniDivision,

What's the current ECU version number for an 07 MCS-manual? That last I heard was 26. If there is a newer version, what problems does it address.

I'm specifically looking for the radiator fan and turbo water pump to run longer after I turn the car's off (parked).

I have and MCS-manual and hood temps regularly break 200F and I have seen it as high as 235F. The extream heat is also causing my front washer jets to weep if I have used them during a ride. Every single time I use the washer just prior to or during a drive, they will weep when the car is parked. As a result semi-permanant water stains on my bonnet, I have stopped washing my windsheild.

Thanks,
Jinxy

Apparently it's cheaper to just replace the scoop instead of addressing the problem.

That is until it burns down someones house because it catches fire in the garage.
(sorry about those two comments; just frustrated)

Am I oversimplifying the solution... make the fan and turbo water pump run longer after turned off ?

I really would like MiniDivision to reply to this known issue.

I'm on my second one, got them to "upgrade" to chrome for @$20 extra so I wouldn't have to deal with the color not quite matching.

Just bounced over to NHTSA to see who has logged safety/defect complaints on the '07 Minis. There are four different ones there.
  • Two for the exhaust tip burning peoples legs when unloading the boot.
  • One for 200 degree hood temps. (sounds just like mine )
  • One is for acceleration (the lack of) issues.
Korby -- Have you measured your hood temps? You might want to log a case as well.

MiniDivision -- Please join in and let us know what's going on.

Jinxy I brought it to the dealers for the hot bonnet and some other issues ,the repair guy laughed when I mentioned it ,said he never heard of it before, put his hand on the hood and pulled it off quickly .When I picked it up He said it's not to hot and if it was to hot it's normal . When I park it in my garage I open the bonnet up to let the heat out .The scoop is slightly warped ,not enough probably to get there attention .It heats up after just a few blocks normal driving .
With that said how do I go about measuring the temp ?

would applying some gold foil help keep the bonnet cooler? I know of a website that sells adhesively backed gold foil. Gold has the best heat reflecting capabilities so i would assume it could help in this situation.

Is there a part number for the non-blocked scoop?

I'm tempted to just Dremel some holes in mine.

Sears has six different models also. This one is only $39.99

My inlaws gave me this one for Xmas last year. Once you get it you can check out the temp of the drivers side foot panel on the A-frame (where the heater core is located. That's gets up to 140F.

If the PepBoys model says it's a non-contact IR Thermometer and it's less $$ then the Actron, go for the PepBoys.

You'll be running around the house measuring all kinds of stuff when you first get it:
waterheater and furnace exhaust, your hands, your ears.

I was glad I had it in my toolbox when I first noticed how hot the Mini's bonnet was. If you're a hands on person or all around tinkerer you'll will like having in your tool arsenal.

Let me know what temps you pull off your bonnet. Mine is definetly hottest around the scoop and as you move away the temps drop. But then as you measure near the washer jets the temps pick back up. Not as high as the scoop, but more then the center of the bonnet.

just curious, has anyone tried measuring hood temp of other cars theyve driven, I'd like to know what is consider normal or average. My mustang hood use to get pretty hot around the hood scoop, but that also depended on how I was driving it and what time of day, etc. never measured it though.
