I have about 2100 miles on my 2007 MCS. My shifter has started to pop out of 6th gear under light acceleration. It happens unpredictively and suddenly, and only in sixth gear. Has anyone else experienced this? How do I fix it?

 

As I see it you have 2 choices, every time you shift into 6th loop some duct tape around the shifter and the arm rest to hold it in place, or bring it to the dealer for service.

 

Typically, this is the result of a synchro being worn out in the transmission.

I have experienced this on vehicles with high miles on the standard transmission, but not on a vehicle with such few miles. I'd suspect an internal transmission problem.

Unfortunately, it sounds like a dealership service trip :(

 

I see a new gearbox in your immediate future. As much as I love duct tape fixes, take it to the dealer.

I agaree. If it is popping out of gear, get the transmission replaced.

 

hello, i know this topic is old.. but I’m experiencing the same issue right now on my 2008 Mini Cooper S.. i wonder if you fixed the 6th gear problem??

When I had a similar problem with 5th gear, it was a worn-out linkage bushing on top of the tranny. Kinda messy to inspect, but lots easier than pulling a transmission. If it was recently serviced, ensure the linkage was put back together properly --- splined shafts can be engaged improperly.
