Metallic Rattle
Metallic Rattle
Recently i have developed this rattle when my car is idling. Its an 03 MCS. Its coming from the Drivers side. It sounds to be a metal on metal sort of sound. Its only got 66xxx kms on it. I have recently changed the drive belt on it. Not quite sure whether its been there before the drive belt change. Can only hear it outside of the car and not inside. It would kind of rattle for like a second and then disappear and comes back again. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this. thanks
try looking at the metal heatshields they can rattle. if thats not the case try this other method.
can you get a stetoscope? if so you can disconnet the metal part from the hose and use it that way. it can help you track down the noise to a specific area where you can use the metal tip to pinpoint it.

from a stetoscope- the thing doctors use to check your heartbeat and lungs and stuff. we use that to pinpoint noises and rattles. if you disconnect the metal tip from the hose and use it, it can direct you to the right area where the noise is coming from.
Details are important, for instance, in your country meenie me, the driver’s side is on the right. Based on that location here is a possible cause that I’ve experienced.
The early model crankshaft vibration damper can loose integrity between the rubber and hub or outer drive ring. Take tension off the belt and grab the crankshaft pulley, try to rock the pulley, if you can create a “ding”, knock noise, or get it to move any at all, it is bad. Replace with the later model OEM crankshaft vibration damper to solve this issue.
My recommendation is to update the early model crankshaft pulley as a preventative measure regardless of whether there is noise or not.

I had a metallic rattle on my '05 MCS last week--I got down on the ground and found one of my exhaust hangers had come loose and one side was just dangling.
